The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine claimed
responsibility in a call to The Associated Press, saying it was in
retaliation for the killing of two of its members last week. The group
identified the bomber as Said Hanani, 18, from the village of Beit
Furik, east of the West Bank city of Nablus.
WHAT da *****!!! How about you wipe out the village and city of Nablus
from the face of the Earth??? With no terrorists there will be no
terrorism.

"modest proposal" that the US and former USSR perform a dual service
to humanity in disposing of their now superfluous nuclear arsenals by
utilizing them to transform the entire Middle East into a continuous
sheet of fused glass as an object lesson in futility to the rest of
the world.

I was going to suggest this.
I think one of the reason for the persistence of the conflict is
because everyone is paying too much attention to it. If we completely
encircle the area with a huge wall and prevent any additonal money and
weapons from entering into the region either via us or the Arabian
peninsula, I have a feeling peace will be achieved faster. For one
thing, sheer exhausion would probably set in for both sides.

The more I think about this, the more I think that the Israelis and
the Palestines are in some sense tragic pawns locked in a death spiral
by international powers outside their control. The Palestinians point
to one of their own killed in the course of something or another via
the Israelis, which generates sympathy in the Arab world, which in
turned leads to someone sending arms and money to the Palestinians,
which in turn gives them additional ability to kill Israelis, which in
turn gives the Israelis a showcase that they need additional military
assistance from the west, whcih in turns gives them an additonal level
of lethality.....
If you look at traditional belligerent powers in Europe up until WWII.
Peace and coexistence is often achieved through sheer exhaustion. I
think because you have outside powers egging these guys on, this kind
of equilibrium is not reached the same way it has been reached in
other places. As long as you have strong financial backers on each
side fighting this war of attrition by proxy and a form of peer
pressure via the international community to not stand down, I think
there will be bloodshed for forseeable future.
Which brings me back to the tongue-and-cheek idea of building a huge
wall around Israel and Palestine. Suppose this is done and a total
embargo is carried out, my guess is that peace will break out at some
point since both sides are deprvied of their source to render
additional violence. Israel has relatively abundant capital, Palestine
labor. There is a strong economic incentive for them to work with each
other.

Peace and coexistence is often achieved through sheer exhaustion. I
think because you have outside powers egging these guys on, this kind
of equilibrium is not reached the same way it has been reached in
other places. As long as you have strong financial backers on each
side fighting this war of attrition by proxy and a form of peer
pressure via the international community to not stand down, I think
there will be bloodshed for forseeable future.
Which brings me back to the tongue-and-cheek idea of building a huge
wall around Israel and Palestine. Suppose this is done and a total
embargo is carried out, my guess is that peace will break out at some
point since both sides are deprvied of their source to render
additional violence. Israel has relatively abundant capital, Palestine
labor. There is a strong economic incentive for them to work with each
other.

without real caring for what happens to them.
I agree. But the same could said of us. Much has been made about how
the Syrian won't let the Palestians migrate to their country as
evidence of their "support" of Palestinians. Well, how many visas have
we issued to the Israelis?
The problem is, neither us nor the Arab wold have an incentive to let
up in our military support, becuase that would led to an immediate
deterioration of our puppets' position.

and many of them retain dual citizenship. I'm not sure what you're

That would also be my impression. The Israelis aren't exactly clamoring
to get into America.
However, we wouldn't be in half the situations we're in right now in the
world if we weren't so situational and fair-weather-friendish about our
foreign policy. Oh, what wonderful "friends" we've had over the years.
They may have been monsters, some of them, but as long as they are OUR
monsters, we seem to turn a blind eye. Which is why I don't think the
spin doctors for the Iraq conflict have any right to use "save the Iraqi
people as an excuse for why we're over there. We wouldn't give a
tinker's damn about those people if it didn't suit our policies of the
momment. In other words, we're users too.

You know, I've actually been getting some nibbles lately on my resume. But
it seems right now at least that companies are only toying with the *idea
of hiring.
One even seems to have had the gall to believe they could hire a tech
writer for what came out to be about what people who've worked at Wal-Mart
a few years might be getting.
Over twenty years in the computer world, over ten doing tech writing,
eleven nationally published projects (about eight of them full fledged
books), and people think I'll work for the contract equivalent of minimum
wage?
Um... no, I'll go work for Wal-Mart directly and they can let the idiots
in marketing explain the API.
Though I've rather thought the rest of the world should build this *huge
wall to enclose the entire area and just, maybe, check again in a few
centuries. See if anybody's left...

I know of a case in which an outside consultant was called in, fired a
bunch of folks, did away with benefits and bonus days, reduced the
amount of upcoming raises, was hired to manage things full time and
was himself fired a few months later.
