BRENTWOOD, Calif. (AP) — A San Francisco Bay area man has sued a Humboldt
County-based brewery, claiming the beer label depicting a Hindu god
holding a beer has offended him and Hindus worldwide.
The label on bottles of Lost Coast Brewery beer intimidates Hindus from
practicing their religion, according to Brij Dhir, a Golden Gate
University law student and attorney licensed in India.
"How can you show a god in such a way?" asked Dhir. "There are lots of
ways of having fun. This is not fun."
Lost Coast owners are considering changing the label of their Indica
India Pale Ale. It depicts elephant-headed Ganesh, god of wisdom and
remover of obstacles, holding a beer in one of his four hands, and
another in his trunk.
"I don't want to offend any Hindu people," said co-owner Barbara Groom.
The company will take the product off the shelves, the brewery's general
manger said in an April 26 e-mail to Dhir.
Also named as defendants are Safeway, which carries the product, the
state Department of Fair Employment and Housing and the state Attorney
General's Office.

But if a bottle of this stuff spilled on the ground and if the shape of
the puddle even vaguely resembled the shape of an elephant, it'd be a
fuckin' miracle....

Appropriately named. Ganesh is closely associated with Cannabis, which
makes the protest extremely amusing, to say the least!

Obviously the latter is the problem: how is he going to smoke his
hookah with a beer in his trunk?

Appropriately named. Ganesh is closely associated with Cannabis, which
makes the protest extremely amusing, to say the least!

It depicts elephant-headed Ganesh, god of wisdom and
remover of obstacles, holding a beer in one of his four hands, and
another in his trunk.

Obviously the latter is the problem: how is he going to smoke his
hookah with a beer in his trunk?

Haven't you ever bonged through beer? Mmmmmmmmmm

Bong through tequila. Seriously has to be done.

Not that I do this sort of thing any more, but where would one even buy a
bong these days?

Good point. I forget how draconian things have got over there. Here
you can get them in any head shop, by mail order, or at any music
festival :-)
If you wanted one, I'd trade it for the other half of the equation...

I haven't seen a head shoppe in over twenty years. When I was in H.S.
there was one several miles away, but then it was closed by changes in
the laws.
