It's a Brilliant Tactical move. |
That's what experts are calling President Bush's move to nominate Roberts as the
Head Supreme Court Justice.
It's been indicated that this was his plan all along, expecting Reinquist to
resign first. But when SD O'Conner retired first, he had to go for associate
first. With the death of Reinquist, Roberts can go straight to the top, and
then nominate another conservative to replace O'Conner.

Another example of his arrogance and ineptitude. He should have elevated a
sitting Conservative who already knew the ropes, especially since his stated
purpose is to have the Court function well in this time of emergency.
Well, Bush was never one to let important strategic necessities get in the
way of partisan politics.

All SC justices have equal power, and Roberts has been working with the SC for
ages now.
Well, Bush was never one to let important strategic necessities get in the

That's the benefit of being elected President. He gets to pick the new guy.

Equal vote, yes. Equal influence, no (not necessarily part of the Chief
Justice job). Equal duties, no. The Chief Justice has some additional
responsibilities.
If a smootlhly functioning Court is important, Bush should have elevated one
of the sitting Justices that he liked.
As usual, his rhetoric does not match reality.

Yes, he does. No question about that. However, my Senator gets to look
this guy over and see if he's worthy.
Can you say "checks and balances?" Or can you only say that when a
President you don't like is in office?

No body is denying any senator his responsibility. Get on with it. If Roberts
is hiding something major, get rid of him. If not, sign him up.
It's called a vote - up or down.

He gets to assign opinions. Sometimes this is extremely important.
Rehnquist, on at least one occasion, switched his vote so he could write the
majority opinion and, in so doing, narrow its scope.
