It's official -- God is made out of clay |

Creationists have the hots for entropy: spontaneous complexity does not
evolve and blah-de-blah, so I highly recommend the June Discover:
"For laboratory scientists trying to recreate the primordial ancestor of
all life on earth, the challenge is to combine nucleotides, fatty acids,
and water in an actual cell. This is a two-step process. Nucliotides
must link together to form RNA strands, and then the RNA must be housed
inside a fatty-acid membrane. Szostak and his colleagues were surprised
to discover that a ubiquitous clay known as montmorillonite accomplishes
both these tasks. When added to the molecular mix, the montmorillonite
causes the nucleotides to spontaneously assemble themselves into RNA,
which is then trapped into fatty-acid bubbles called vesticles. The
result is something that resembles a cell: It has genetic material and
water contained within a waterproof fatty-acid pouch that, under the
proper circumstances, could grow and even divide."

I just bought a bag of montmorillonite! How cool. When I've finished
manufacturing face packs, I'll wander into the kitchen and see if I
can sort out a few new life forms :-)

What a pity, the full article requires a subscriber registration.
Does anyone have a public link to the stuff this article discusses?
