Object: It's only a matter of time.
Something occurred to me today. With out litigation-happy society,
sooner or later, one of these nutjobs who seriously believes in
astrology and reads their horoscope every day is going to try to sue
the newspaper because they did what their horoscope said and it had a
bad outcome.
Newspapers probably put some kind of disclaimer on the horoscopes, but
eventually some ambulance chaser is either going to find a way around
it, or push the case through regardless.

A few years ago some relatives of mine (one a real relative, the other
relatet through marriage (to the real relative)) was at a party and
for some reason we read their horoscopes. According to it, he man had
a high probability of travel later in the week. He spends a lot of
time travelling in his work, so nobody was really surprised that he
actually had a trip planned then. The problem was when we read the
woman's horoscope. Her chances for romance was going to improve in
that time! Of course that caused some comments on the line of: There
must be some courses in romantic behaviour. and: Who are you going to
be romantic with?
They don't belive in that garbage, and they are still married.
Lisbeth.

There was a letter to the editor in the local paper a few years ago in
which the pissy, prissy writer whined about the paper's decision to put
that most noble and christlike of men, billy graham, right below the
horoscope every day.
I can't think of a better place--though it does rather spoil my view of
the comics on the facing page.

Don't they usually say "For entertainment purposes only" or something like
that?

Aries sues over bad horoscope
Reported by AFP, 21 Sept. 2005
http://uk.news.yahoo.com/20092005/323/aries-man-sues-
negative-horoscope.html
MONTBELIARD, France (AFP) - A Frenchman born under the
sign of Aries who sued a newspaper for giving him an
unfavorable horoscope was told he was wasting the
court's time and ordered to pay 350 euros
(425 dollars) in legal fees.
The man complained about a prediction earlier this year
that Arians would "rediscover the emotions of
adolescence especially in the field of love, where the
desire to have fun will overtake the need to build
something longer-lasting."
He told the court that he was a "serious father" and
risked being typecast by employers as a "skirt-chaser"
and therefore unreliable.

I would support them in their case.

I read years ago that the astrologer for a London newspaper with
a large circulation was sick in the hospital and unable to write his
column. The paper chose one of their newswriters and gave him the job
over his protests. In order to express his contempt for the
assignment the guy decided to make some humor. He wrote 11 normal
sounding ***** horoscopes, but for one of the signs he wrote this
ominous predicion: "All the pain and suffering of yesteryear are as
nothing compared to the woes that will befall you today." The paper
was flooded with calls by panic-stricken people demanding to get in
touch with the astrologer. All this would be funny, but they think
that at least two people committed suicide over his prank. I guess it
is predictable that for a paper with a circulation of a couple million
people, there will be a few unstable loonies out there. The guy felt
bad that his prank had resulted in the death of two morons.

Did the families of the two who committied suicide sue the paper? Or the
guy that wrote the horoscopes?

At one small-town paper, the newsfeed from the horoscope
provider went silent for about a week. The Lifestyle editor
simply pulled old horoscopes from previous years, quite at
random, and changed the dates. No one noticed, of course.

Have you seen the panic that spreads when a newspaper stops printing
the horoscope altogether?
Dogbert: You must consult the stars when making management decisions.
PHB: Does that work?
Dogbert: Well, if you believe that it works, then you aren't bright
enough to make your own decisions, so randomness will be an
improvement.
PHB: Q.E.D.
