After four drafts and 120,000 words thrown in the trash. He's 59 chapters
long and weighs 82,300 words.
Now if I can just con a publisher into buying this sucker...

This is hard to explain but experts "collapse" steps. They jump from A to
F because B, C, D, and E are just "obvious" to them. Part of the job of a
tech writer is prying those skipped steps out of them. If you don't at
least have *some idea of the "lay of the land," you can miss that. Not
even be aware there *are missing steps. I've seen far too many so-called
technical writers who know periods and commas and fonts but their
understanding of computers is they can log on to their AOL account! Whee!

LOL, oh dear. And I'm going to be interviewing for a position on Monday
where I would be working for the head of an IT department.
As one who works at the end level with a lot of technical equipment it
would sure be nice if the companies went back to hiring professional
writers and putting out a good manual. I have to think that the time
they spend on the phone, not with some tech overseas, but when it
really hits the fan the engineer doing the design has got to cost
them. However, my company is the same way, So many times it is some
simple ***** thing like a box not checked, a file not created, has to be
done manually but nothing tells you that. I spend 2-3 days go around
and around until I get the real engineer on the phone and in 30
seconds he tells me what I need to know. The customers are the ones
that suffer the most, the people paying the bills, arghhhhhh!!!!!!!

Last one I did, the main programmer on the project said the support calls
stopped. Went from people pestering him all the time to *one call. And
that one call was from a "computer consultant" who couldn't grasp the
concept that input and output files needed *different *names (she was
piping her output to her input files then wondering where the input file
went... some people, you just can't help).
But, we don't want to do that anymore. Let's ship everything to Banglore!

The damn plot. I backed myself into a corner.
Nothing works. Except I haven't tried the ultimate solution yet. Starting

quarter million words on that beast (of which only half survived).
<brrrr>

This sounds like a story I insisted on writing from one
characters' viewpoint. I tried it twice, getting even further
into the story the second time before giving up. One of
the other characters kept yelling in my head that HIS
was the proper viewpoint. He was right. The third time,
I wrote it from his viewpoint and it worked like a charm.

They get uppity don't they? Part of the problem with the big novel is a
secondary character took over as the main character.
But he always been pushy...

How much resolution are you trying for? How much is required to
convey
what your going for? Maybe you don't need to make it that neat.
I'll worry about that next year...

The damn plot. I backed myself into a corner.
Nothing works. Except I haven't tried the ultimate solution yet. Starting

quarter million words on that beast (of which only half survived).
Pity the Infinite Improbability Drive has already been done.

Oh that one's complicated. I don't even want to think about it this year.
If I'm going to pull this jump to fiction off, I've got to get three,
maybe four of the easier things done and circulating around publishers.
And *hopefully something will sell. I couldn't even begin to think about
taking time for the big novel before next year. Too big, too time
consuming, too speculative (not to mention the hardest thing I've ever
written).
So I can't even seen getting back to the big one before next year.
Especially now that I found an idea right here in the ng for the sequel to
the one I just finished...
(I'm hoping that little book doesn't just find a home but turns into a
series)

I hope you let us know when it gets published. If you still don't want to be

at that stage you can always post something along the lines "I came across

I would buy it just because Mark wrote it but reading it, well, not
exactly my thing. I do buy all my nieces books when they are
published even though we always receive an advance copy. Matter of
fact we got the last one, the one coming out soon, a year in advance,
so we have one of the 50 copies of the first draft, autographed, with
a dedication t my kids, blah blah blah..........
