Former St. Mary's pastor sentenced

The former pastor of St. Mary's Episcopal Church, who admitted
shooting into his church office and lying to police about it, has been
sentenced to three years supervised probation, 80 hours of community
service and ordered to pay a $200 fine.
Richard Reynolds initially told police that he was alone in his office
the evening of Jan. 19 when someone fired into the church building,
2800 Harris Grade Road. The incident sparked the Sheriff's Department
to block off the area and call in a helicopter to search for a
suspected gunman.
After the investigation, Reynolds admitted that he had fired the shot
and pleaded no contest to shooting into an uninhabited building.
Reynolds was relieved of his duties as pastor at the church and as a
chaplain with the Lompoc Police and Santa Barbara County Sheriff's
departments.
Reynolds was sentenced Monday by Judge James Iwasko.
“We have been doing a lot of praying for him and our prayers were that
he would not have to serve any jail time,” said Bob Lingl, St. Mary's
senior warden. “We are very relieved he has just been sentenced to
probation.”
Lingl said Reynolds was under considerable stress at the time because
of a number of issues at the church. Although Reynolds would be
welcomed into the church as a parishioner, Lingl said he believes the
former pastor will leave the area because he came to Lompoc because of
St. Mary's.
Reynolds has put in a request with the Los Angeles Diocese for
retirement. An interim pastor, the Rev. Mort Ward, has taken over
pastoral duties at the church while the parishioners search for a new
leader. The search could take up to 18 months, Lingl said.
