November 16, 2006 - Former Hanna High School teacher Steven Ray Brooks
on Wednesday was sentenced to five years in prison for an “improper
relationship” with a 16-year-old student.
Judge Leonel Alejandro of the 357th state District Court handed down
the sentence shortly after 5 p.m. for the 49-year-old Brooks, who was
a Hanna criminal justice teacher. Brooks was convicted on Oct. 2 of
four counts of improper relationship be-tween a student and an
educator and resigned the Brownsville Independent School District on
Oct. 12.
Following the judge’s sentence, the victim, now 19, read a letter to
Brooks in the courtroom.
“The past year has been the worst year of my life,” she said. “I’ve
dropped so many tears over this.”

spoke fa-vorably of Brooks.
