Deacons are elected, by the congregation. They hold the
office, while maintaining good conduct. The board of deacons
can remove them for cause. No mention is made of a
resignation. So most likely the Board of Deacons removed
him. Or demanded his resignation. Many deacons resign
because of family or business does not allow them enough
time for the unpaid office. Doesn't mean they became
atheist. Being dishonest or criminal is not a Christian
trait. However most dishonest people claim to Christian.
You will know them by their works.
