A Hoffman Estates woman was legally insane at the time she fatally
stabbed her two children last year, said a psychiatrist who evaluated
her.
Julie Koehler, the public defender representing Tonya Vasilev, told
Cook County Criminal Court Judge Lawrence Fox on Tuesday that an
expert determined that Vasilev continues to be unfit for trial and was
legally insane when she stabbed her son, Christian, 9, and daughter,
Grace, 3.

Authorities have said Vasilev's husband, Nikolai, found his son in the
family's home. He then found his daughter upstairs in a pool of blood,
with his wife, who was sitting nearby holding a knife.
He is a pastor and a native of Bulgaria. His wife is originally from
North Carolina.
