A 16-year-old girl and her parents have filed a $10 million civil
lawsuit against a Jackson man she said raped her at an East Jackson
church last year. The church, which had hired the man as a custodian
despite his prior conviction for statutory rape, also is a defendant
in the suit, according to court documents.
The victim and her parents, who are represented by Mark Donahoe, are
suing the accused rapist, Christopher Montrell White; Pastor James
Elliot of Cumberland Missionary Baptist Church, who hired White; and
the trustees of the church, the suit says. The trustees of the church
are listed in the suit as being James E. Perry, Howard Bush, Sam
Bowers, Thedus Holland, William P., Lawrence Pack, Larry Lewis, Frank
Johnson Sr. and Fred Coger. The church's current board of trustees,
some of whom are unknown according to the lawsuit, also is being sued.
