JAGOTD Bacab |
Bacab
Maya
This gets rather confusing for they have so many names. They are
associated with the four points of the compass, as well as colors. In the
Dresden Codex, they are also referred to as the opossum actors or the
Toliloch. This is because they were represented as carrying the image of
the ruling god for the incoming year on their back. Individually of
course.
They are referred to as canopic gods, attendant gods, and protective gods.
Fortunately there are only four of them.
From various sources, they may either be:
Kan (yellow), Chac (red), Zac (white) and Ek (black)
or:
Hobnil (red) the east, Can Tzicnal (white) the north, Zac Cimi (black) the
west and Hozanek (yellow)the south.
They are the sons of Itzamna and Ixchel.
