JAGOTD Cipactli |
Cipactli (great earth mother)
Aztec
Worshiped from approximately 750 pre-Gregorian until 1500 Gregorian. The
likelihood is very strong that she was worshiped even much earlier than
that. She has a strong presence within the Codex illustrations, as well a
stone carvings. We find literature referring to her in the pre-Columbian
codices. It is uncertain whether she originated as a goddess or not.
traditionally, she first showed up in the form of a huge alligator,
possibly created by the underworld deities Mictlantecuhlti and
Mictecacihuatl in the form of a huge alligator. There is a school of
thought that equates her with Tlaltecuhtli, a toad-like earth monster who
was torn apart to form heaven and earth.
One legend has are fighting with Tezcatlipoca where tears an ear off to
prevent her from hiding in the depths, and somehow or another she managed
to bite off his right foot. A bit confusing, no?
