Coyolxauhqui [Golden Bells] (coh-yohl-shau'-kee)
Aztec
Cult center: The Great Temple at Tenochtitlan
Rather special, really, she is the earth and moon goddess. She's related to
the 400 Star deities (Huitznauna) who just happen to be under her control.
Her magical powers are such that she could do great harm, were she is so
inclined.
One variation of the myth has Huitzilopochtli tossing her head into the
night sky, creating the moon. Another variation is that she was an ally, he
could not save, and this was his way of honoring her.
As a sideline, she is also a hearth deity, one of the Xiuhtecuhtli complex.
