Jehovahs Witness Crazy Cancer Cures. |
***Watchtower 1913 July 1 p. 200 A Cure for Surface Cancer ***
. We have recently learned of a very effective and simple
remedy for cancers which show themselves on the surface of the
body. We are informed that a physician, after testing this
remedy, paid $1000 for the information, and that he has
established a Cancer Hospital which is doing good work. The
recipe has come to us free and we are willing to communicate the
formula, but only to those who are troubled with surface cancers
and who will write to us directly, stating particulars. No fee
will be charge, but in order to protect the sufferers, we
require a promise that they will not sell the formula to others,
nor receive pay for the use of it, nor communicate the formula
to anybody. Any one known to be a sufferer can be informed of
the terms on which the prescription is obtainable through us.
How many people believed this and died as a result? And they
claimed they got this right from the mouth of Jehovah God.

Probably no one that would not have died if they hadn't used the formula.
And they
claimed they got this right from the mouth of Jehovah God.
Where is such a claim made?
Brother Russell only reported on what a doctor believed to be a cure for
certain kinds of cancer, and offered to give that information to any who
requested it. I suppose that he felt that would be the Christian thing to
do. He asked no money for this information. Many Christian publications of
various denominations often did the same thing. There is nothing wrong with
that, but those who seek to find evil can make such appear to be evil when
it wasn't.
I have not been able to find out what was actually given in the formula. I
highly suspect that the cure that Brother Russell was sent was a paste based
on a combination of ingredients, including Bloodroot and Zinc Chloride, or
Zinc Oxide. Many similar formulas exist today, and some can be found on the
internet:

(This could be very close to the formula Russell received.)

What puzzles me is the stipulation that the fomula wasn't to be
communicated to anybody. Surely the right thing (the Christian thing
as it is claimed above) to do would be to publish the formula on a
website and ensure that as many people as possible got to hear of it.
Why the secrecy?

There was no Internet in 1913. They could have published it in a local
paper.
The WTS could put all their redundant boring literature on the Internet as
well, but they wont. They want to SELL their brand of salvation.

The transfer of money is essential for salvation.

In fact it's the only reason for salvation.

I cannot answer this, but this does not mean that one has to assume some
sinister motive behind the stipulations placed upon it. I assume that the
stipulations were made by the physician who provided the formula. Why would
he make such stipulations? -- I don't know, but I am sure that there was a
reason for the method used. Perhaps the physician was seeking a patent on
the formula.
Surely the right thing (the Christian thing
as it is claimed above) to do would be to publish the formula on a

Of course, many such formulas can be found on the internet today -- there
was no internet back then; as far as Brother Russell's works, you can find
them all online:
