Grandmother Charged With Crime
by Rocco Vertuccio
Published Jan 25, 2005 (New York state, USA)
What would make a grandmother turn against her own grandchild?
Police in Wayne County are trying to figure that out after they
arrested a Wolcott woman for allegedly trying to stab her
granddaughter to death.
Lawmen in Wayne County call it a strange crime. Vivian Brown is a
57-year old grandmother, a woman with no criminal record. She was
known for her loving relationship with her granddaughter, age 10.
Now, Vivian Brown is accused of trying to kill her granddaughter.
"She just for whatever reason, went off and wanted to kill and
tried to kill her," says Wayne County District Attorney Richard
Healy.
Police say, last week, during one of her frequent visits with her
granddaughter, Brown asked her if she loved her. The girl said
"yes".
Brown then told the girl to bring her a knife from the wall. The
girl did. Police say Brown then told the girl, "I'm going to kill
you."
Police say, Brown then stabbed at her granddaughter several times.
The knife struck the girl's wrist. Police say the girl then ran to
her father's house next door. Her grandfather called 911.
Police say Vivian Brown's mental condition deteriorated after her
arrest. She was taken to a medical facility where police say she
told doctors, "Jesus told me to do it."
Police say the girl is now okay. She is expected to make a full
recovery. She is now back in her mother's custody in Cayuga
County. Police say more than likely she will never have contact
with her grandmother again.
"In the event she is released from the hospital or jail, the child
will not be allowed to visit the father if he continues to live
next door to the grandmother. It's just too dangerous," says
Healy.
Police say Brown has no history of mental illness. Doctors are now
reviewing her mental health. The results of that examination will
decide her fate.
"This is very difficult for the family," says Healy.
Brown is at the Marcy State Correctional Facility near Utica.
Healy says he could accept a not guilty plea by reason of mental
disease or defect if she is found competent to stand trial. He
explains that Brown would then be automatically sent to a hospital
to get the care she needs.

She probably read it in the Christian mythologies. "Jesus told me to kill
you" is probably something she read.

She's never shown signs of being religious before?

Maybe what she needs is a deprogramming center.

"Atheism is the world of reality, it is reason, it is freedom. Atheism is human
concern, and intellectual honesty to a degree that the religious mind cannot
begin to understand. And yet it is more than this. Atheism is not an old
religion, it is not a new and coming religion, in fact it is not, and never has
been, a religion at all. The definition of Atheism is magnificent in its
simplicity: Atheism is merely the bed-rock of sanity in a world of madness."
