Jimmy Carter is a true patriot, but his legacy will
forever be tarred by the fact that he was an honest
and capable leader.
The Republicans savaged him for it.
Looking back, it was easy to see that it was during the
Carter years when the die was cast, when democracy
in America was sentenced to death.
The Republicans invented the "Moral Majority" during
the Carter years, in a wildly successful attempt to
convince fundamentalist Christians that a divorced
Hollywood movie star was more like them than a
born-again lay preacher.
That's also when the Republicans jumped into bed
with the Iranians, in an attempt to avoid what was
called the "October Surprise."
The "October Surprise" was the THREAT (as the
Republicans saw it) that the U.S. hostages being
held by Iran would be released ahead of the election,
giving Carter an instant boost in the polls. This is
something the Republicans wanted avoid at all cost.
Freeing Americans from captivity, that is. They
wanted the Americans being held hostage to rot
in Iran for a few extra months.
Being in bed with Iran during the twilight of the
Carter years lead the Republicans DIRECTLY to
the Iran-Contra scandal.
The arming of Iran had begun long before anyone
ever heard of Iran-Contra, back in Reagan's first
term. Iran-Contra was how they stopped the arms
shipments, not how they began.
Anyhow, that relationship with Iran continues
to this day, and is seen in Bush's protection of
Iran.
Iraq didn't try to buy Nigerian yellow cake. Iran
did. Iraq didn't have Al Qaida ties. Iran does. Iraq
didn't try to buy parts to a nuclear centrifuge. Iran
didn't just buy parts, they bought blueprints AND
a complete working centrifuge. Iraq was never a
major sponsor of terrorism. Iran has cut checks to
every Islamic militant group on the planet. Change
a 'n' to a 'q' and invade Iraq.
Now if anyone tries to use the evidence against
Iran they will be laughed at.
"Uranium? Nigeria? Like we haven't heard that
one before!"
"Gas centrifuge? Please, we already invaded
one country on that fake excuse!"
It all started during the Carter years. It was back
then, in the Carter years, that the Republicans made
their deal with the devil.

Title: Re: Jimmy Carter nails it 12 Nov 2005 11:37:44 PM
Former President Jimmy Carter charges that the Bush administration has
left basic American values in the dust.
Carter's case against the Bush administration is outlined in his 20th
book, Our Endangered Values: America's Moral Crisis.
The nation's 39th president was in Kansas City Friday for a
book-signing appearance on the Country Club Plaza. Earlier, Star
political correspondent Steve Kraske interviewed the Georgia Democrat
and Nobel Peace Prize winner before he left Milwaukee to fly to Kansas
City.
What follows is an edited transcript of their conversation:
Mr. President, there's a tradition in this country that says former
presidents don't criticize current ones. But in your book and in
interviews, you're doing just that. How come?
Most of the folks with whom I've had interviews have commented that I
very carefully avoid any personal criticism of the president. I hardly
mention him in the book at all. That's not the point...
But this administration has injected into the American political system
a dramatic, unprecedented and profound change in the basic values of
our national policy...
It's not a matter of Democrats versus Republicans because the new
policies I describe in the book...are different from what George Bush
Sr. expounded. They're different from what Dwight Eisenhower and
Ronald Reagan and Gerald Ford proposed and implemented and obviously
from what Democratic presidents have done down through the ages...And
this relates to the fundamental policies of our country concerning
peace.
We've never had an administration in history before that put forward
anything other than the nation of the United States would go to war
against another country with bombs, with missiles, with invasions,
unless our national security was directly threatened. This is also
international law.
We now have a new policy called pre-emptive war...We've reserved the
right to go to war with another country if they have an unsavory leader
we want to remove or sometime in the distant future our security might
be threatened.
Another example...is our public claim that our CIA and others have a
right to torture prisoners. This is something that is profoundly
different from anything we've done before...
We also have new policies, unprecedented in nature, of authorizing
apparently with enthusiasm the most horrendous deficits our country
have ever accumulated. These are not deficits...based on spending
overseas or to protect our country or to give better services in
education or health care or housing or jobs. But the deficits have
almost exclusively from dramatic reductions in taxation on the richest
Americans alive.
We've also had an abandonment of an historic commitment to our
environment....President Eisenhower himself is the one who set aside
the Alaska Natural Wildlife Region...Now because of pressure from oil
companies, this has been despoiled.
This administration has overtly been breaking down what I consider to
be the historic American value of separation of church and state.
It's not a matter of any personal displeasure with President
Bush...It's just a matter of a difference of opinion of what the
basic policies of our nation should be.
But on this idea of pre-emptive war, this administration will argue
that because of terrorism, this is a new era, that the country has a
right to go to war to prevent carnage here at home.
We've had terrorism threats down through the ages. I had terrorism
threats when I was in office as well. I know the two sides to this
issue...
After 9-11, I would say we had unanimous support from around the world
from all nations in sympathy with (us) and a commitment that said
let's join together to decrease the threat from terrorism and root
out terrorism in our own country.
We have lost that support. The United States now stands almost alone.
In Egypt, only 2 percent of the people look with approval on America.
Four percent only in Jordan. We've lost that support, and I
wouldn't say we have the unanimous or the enthusiastic support of
France or other European countries...
We have lost the basic sense of alliance and friendship and cooperation
and teamwork that we've tried to engender in the past. I would say
that George Bush Sr. did a wonderful job of this when we went to war
with Iraq 11 years before we launched this new war.
It's not a matter of whether we're for or against terrorism.
Everyone is against it. How do you go about addressing terrorism? Alone
(by) alienating the rest of the world? Or trying to form partnerships?
What's the danger that this new direction poses for the country?
My own opinion is that the American people have not been aware of the
totality of these changes. That's why I wrote this book, with some
degree of reluctance and even trepidation, to try to spell out exactly
what I believe happened...
What I think is happening is that our country is now faced with the
need to have an open and I would say enthusiastic and thorough debate
on these major issues.
I think the country needs to be aware of what's taking place in such
a radical and profound, and I think deleterious, way on basic policies
and address them as the elections come along.
In my opinion, the results of elections this past Tuesday in New
Jersey, California and Virginia were good indications that there's
more awareness now of what's been happening in this country than
before.
Former Missouri Sen. Jack Danforth has been sounding some of the same
themes. He said not long ago that the Christian right has taken over
the Republican Party. What do you make of what he's doing?
I quote Jack Danforth in my book. I think he's exactly right. Part of
the overall problem....is the breaking down of the barrier between
church and state, which has been historic for us. In fact, Thomas
Jefferson said we should build a wall between church and state, between
government and religion...
Yet you admit that as a born-again Christian yourself, that your
religious beliefs have been intertwined with your political principles.
For many voters, that was part of your appeal. What's so different
about your approach compared to what the religious right is trying to
do?
I would say Jack Danforth certainly let his political decisions be
influenced by his deep religious faith...
I think every human being is....affected by the principles they learned
in their religious faith: justice, peace, humility, service,
forgiveness, compassion, love.
What's happened in recent years...has been a move toward basic
fundamentalism in religion and the United States and also in the
government. I try to define fundamentalism, because it's hard to
separate from the neo-conservatives.
The changes that have taken place in the last five years have been an
overt and deliberate merger of the two, of the breaking down of the
previous historic values of the separation of church and state. Now
major religious organizations publicly espouse political support from
the pulpit for the right wing of the Republican Party.
And now, $2 billion in taxpayers' money is being channeled through
churches almost exclusively Christian churches. The big argument is can
we distribute money from the churches on a non-discriminatory basis.
Some members of Congress said it ought to be non-discriminatory, but
the administration said let it be discriminatory. It's all right if
the church prefers to give...monies to people who share that church's
religious faith.
That's profoundly different, radical in nature. That's never been
seen before in this country.
What's the goal of the Christian right?
I think the goals of some of them...is a kind of theocracy in this
nation where the United States is identified as an exclusively
Christian nation...or a Baptist nation. And where their particular
faith is given pre-emption or favoritism over all the other religions
or non-religions in our country.
To me this violates the principles that all of us have said you can be
whatever you wish, but the government should not intrude itself and
overtly show discrimination against religions that are not shared by
the leaders in Washington.
That's what I think is at stake.
