Joan of Arcadia |
My wife and I watched tonight. Basically and fluff show, but I did have a
problem with one piece of the storyline.
The younger brother is the "man of science" character who I suppose is to
be the source for intellectual thought. When asked if he believed in god,
he said, "It's logical. If you believe in the Law of Special Relativity,
which I do, and if you believe in the Laws of Thermadynamic, which I do,
and if you believe that light is sentient, which it shows all the
properties of being...then yes, God is logical." (not a direct quote but
close)
Excuse me? Where did they come up with that shite and I hope they're not
planning on passing this off as anything close to real scientific thought
or knowledge...

I suppose if you're silly enough to believe that light is sentient, you are
silly enough to think that god is logical.

Sounds like gobbledygook to me. Impressive to the ingnorant and insulting
to the informed. How can light be sentient anyway? Perhaps you should ask
them in a letter.

Sadly, in this country many people get most of their "knowledge" about
science and history from movies and TV.

I'm wondering if the writer(s) thought that the wave/particle duality and
slot test somehow means light is sentient since it seems to "know" which
slow is open. I've heard that from people a time or two. Either that, or
the writer(s) read that a laser is "coherent light" and misunderstood what
coherent meant? (see: "Real Genius" 'It's a laser. That means it's coherent
light.' 'So, it can talk?')

I'm just waiting for the first theist to roll of the lines from that show
as support for their claims that their godthing exists and is logically
justified by those claims...

Total bogus bullsh*t. I am a college biology professor, and have had
several years of chemistry and physics, and have even taught physics. I
too thought 'where the hell did those lines come from?' when I heard it
during the show. Dramatic license I guess. Consider that at least the
character purporting it was a teenage boy, at least not a character
claiming to be the local physics professor.
In fact, one could argue that the Law of Special relativity argues
AGAINST a god, since nothing can travel faster than light, how could an
omnipresent god move from here to there or over there instantly. Light is
sentient? Excuse me?! Light has no feelings, it is simply photon
particles of energy.

True. But, I'm more thinking that anybody who already accepts the position
is going to use the arguments themselves without citing that they got it
from a teenaged character on a fluff TV show.

Magic, mate! Pure magic! Their godthing's not bound by the laws of our
universe, which is how they get around their own constraints.
