Joh Bjelke-Petersen recants on death bed |
Brisbane April 24 2005 EAP. In an amazing turn around in the last
part of an amazing life that saw Joh Bjelke-Petersen, originally a New
Zealander, turned farmer, politician, Premier for 19 years Sir Joh
renounced the faith that had carried him through much of his larger
than life controversial turbulent life. Called a "bible bashing
*****" by former Prime Minister Gough Whitlam and known by most for
his strict narrow minded interpretation of Christianity Sir Joh at the
end finally had trouble reconciling his belief system with the actions
of his Premiership.
His wife, Lady Flo, has told EAP in an interview that towards the end
Joh gave a lot of thought the the implications of his Premiership in
the eyes of God. "It caused him great pain" said Lady Flo. A close
friend and business associate who wanted to remain unnamed filled in
EAP with an outline of a conversation he had with Sir Joh in the last
days. "Joh always thought of a clear and defined good and evil but the
length of office has eaten into his integrity with endless
compromises". "He never meant any harm to anyone and was a really good
man but he found himself saying yes to apartheid, banning free speech,
running a corrupt police force, turning Queensland into a moonlight
state, lying under oath and rigging juries". "He knew he was a good
man but was in no doubt about the heavenly blowback from his
behaviour". It seems this caused a crisis of faith in Sir Joh. How
could a decent human turn into a dictator simply by trying to be a
good father to the state. But like a Shakespearean tragedy the
concerned father turned into hated tyrant.
The idea that good and evil might be more complicated than the holy
roller polarity of his fire brand faith shocked him to the core. Sir
Joh apologised for all his misdeeds as Premier, for blocking free
speech, for lying, for compromising the Westminster System and the
balance of powers. He was particularly grieved by his appointment of
Albert Field to the Senate and believed this had fundamentally changed
Australian politics for the worse. "This is power gone mad and it was
my fault, I'm sorry but I was corrupted" Joh tearfully told his
friend. "And don't call Sir Joh because I never really deserved a
knighthood. I simply put forward my own name out of vanity.
Joh also praised Philip Adams for adding to the quality of public
discourse. He smiled as Philip Adam's opinion piece in the Australian
<http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au/common/story_page/0,5744,1504104
8%5E12272,00.html> was read to him. "Philip was right and I was
wrong" he was heard to mutter in a very soft voice. Among others
admired by Sir Joh was High Court Justice Markus Kirby adding that he
wished the gay community the best of luck and could see no reason why
gay couples should not be able to marry and raise children. Sir Joh
had embraced the secular democratic values he had fought so long
against.
His last few sentences muttered were related by Joh's friend. "I know
death is like existence before birth. I know now that my faith was
just a fog of false hope and I'm sorry for the harm that came from it.
I know my faith motivated actions were really nothing but fear and
grasping for false hopes. A pie in the sky when you die is still not a
good reason to be a decent human. This is less noble than the actions
by Justice Kirby who does much good without the hope of an eternal
reward. Christianity is a fraud and Christian motivation comes from a
questionable base."
Sir Joh than lost consciousness.

Sunny the man was a nutbar, dishonest, no respect for the checks and
balances of power, no respect for the Westminster system, hostile to
human rights, sympathetic to apartheid, manipulative, unconscionable.
No respect for the law or legal procedures. I don't care what anyone
did or did not do in the 60s. That is a non sequitur. I care for the
damage to democracy he brought. If that does not mean very much to you
then I am sorry for you. I pity you.
Feel free to use the "he kept the trains running on time" defence if
you want but I am not impressed by that silly apology for that bible
bashing power crazed looney playing with our democratic institutions.
I am sure that if you asked him about locking down Brisbane for the
Springbok game he would say "some of my best friends are black yadda

this ***** too many times before to be impressed by it.

a kind forward of a recent West Australian paper article
******************************************
In an 3 full pages article in the West Australian of Saturday 23rd of April,
the Swan River Funeral Oration was pronounced.
Tears of sorrow & despair were flowing freely from the eyes of some of the
attendants, a very small minority INDEED of Australian population since
only two persons showed concern & dismay over the Ecological Crime !!!
... and Irresponsible attitude of the successive WA Governments going back
to Sir Corrupt Court !
( the Head Crook in the infamous Great Sandy Desert Swindle Cover up )
These were Dr Jacques Philippe, a retired Clinical Psychologist of Perth,
and one outstanding lady from Canberra, webmaster of one of Australia 's
most outstanding informative web site.
Apart those extraordinary sensitive souls, the whole issue was dismissed by
the chewing, munching, boozing, brainwashed & bleating Australian population
at large, as a normal & inescapable event
All the recent life of the Swan River going back to the lush days when Sir
Turcaud was still in Australia, to the terrible degradation following his
forced departure from the Land under pain of death, and the terrible final
situation of today were passed in review.by the West Australian paper :
INEXISTENT DRAINAGE DUE TO THE DDD.
INCREDIBLE LEVELS OF INDUSTRIAL & DOMESTIC POLLUTION.
ALGAE PROLIFERATION FEEDING ON UNDECOMPOSED NITROGEN COMPONENTS
DEAD FISH BELLY-UP BY THE CARTLOAD.
( for you Bastards to shove down your throats)
Now like the rest of the Land, the Swan River is awaiting my return, the
return of the "Rain Master" ; the return of a most deserving Australia
Mining Pioneer, crucified since over a quarter of a Century by Australia's
Mining & Political Criminals !!!
WILL I BE BACK IN TIME TO SAVE WHAT CAN STILL BE SAVED ??? ... That is the
Question !

He was the Premier of Queensland - sort of like a governor of one of
your states, but they have different powers, and are pretty much
controlled by the Federal Gov.
He's the main reason why Queensland is fifty years behind the rest of

length of office has eaten into his integrity with endless
compromises".
If only, if only.
Cheers,
TGHO

I am afraid that Joh never did have the sense to say something like that.

Oh yeah! And I just saw a flying pig!

You have to remember that Joh was not an economist, a lawyer or a
political scientist. Its easy to trip ordinary people up by asking them
questions that employ expert terminology.
For instance, there are thousands, if not millions of successful
managers who use available information to make sound decisions. Pick
one at random and ask if their information system is in its third
normal form and watch the blank look you get.
You also have to remember that Joh had a rural constituency. Rural
people often use "looking stupid" as a means of eliciting further
information in a conversation. Many farmers know precicely how many
kilograms per hectare of specific nutrients are required on different
parts of their property, and the spreading rates of a variety of
fertiliser products which will achieve this efficiently. To talk to
them you wouldn't think they could find their own backsides with both
hands and a map though. Its probably a cultural thing.
When I met Joh (for about 2 minutes) I observed none of the games he
liked to play with reporters. His words were clear and unhesitating. He
spoke directly and to the point. In short I believe his media personna
was an act, and a damn good one.
Despite a lack of formal education, contrast Joh's approach with that
of the highly edicated Bob Carr in NSW. Bob whines that lots of extra
people move to NSW and it is putting a strain on the economy. Joh had a
similar problem but viewed it as an opportunity. Carr (and now Beatty)
imposes restrictions on water and electricity usage, tries to limit the
use of motor vehicles and generally hold back people's aspirations. Joh
built railways into coalfields, new power stations and dams, and had
freeway flyovers built in the middle of cow paddocks in anticipation of
growth.
TQs don't mean you are smart, just that you have spent time in formal
study. A smart person with TQs is ideal, but a smart person without
them is far better in a leadership position than a dull person with
them.

The old fascist "got the trains running on time" defence (sorry about
the gas chambers). Or the jury rigging. Or the perjury. Or the
corruption. Or the apartheid sympathy. Or the Albert Field affair. Or
the suppression of free speech. Or the censorship. On and on it goes.
Same argument used for Augusto Pinochet, and in happier times for US-
Iraq relations, Saddam Hussein and used today for assorted monsters.
Sorry I am unimpressed by the "got the trains running on time" line.
