Lovely paintings, Stoney, especially the first
and last. The detail work and colors in The
Hay Wain is incredible. I think the horse and
rider Constable removed must have been in
front of the dog. I'm guessing that the rocks
under the water were replacements for the
shadow. Of course, I could be completely
wrong. And, being a fan of ruined old castles
and churches, the last painting was perfect
for me. Of course, the birds flying around the
ruins just had to remind me of the animated
birds in the original "King Kong" - the ones
flying around Skull Island...

You're welcome, Mickey. The man was a remarkable artist. Many years
ago when I was stationed in Scotland I shipped a large framed print back
to the States as a present for my mom. It was 'Flatford Mill' and not
long ago I came upon the study for it on the net. I found it very
interesting.

A few years ago I stopped at Flatford (in Suffolk) and had a walking
tour led by an art student to several of the places Constable painted
(with the guide toting along copies [not full sized] of both the
finished paintings and the earlier drafts).
http://www.eastbergholt-bells.org.uk/ and click on Flatford Mill
It is remarkable that the settings for many of his painting are no
more than a very short walk apart.
Emma
ps. Suffolk is a beautiful county and well worth a visit.

Why remarkable? Less travel time equates to more painting time.

Now that I'm 'tossing paint around' that'll be a location to see. Thank
you.

Well yes but we are talking about 5 minutes if that.

I believe there is even an artist colony in Dedham, Essex which is a
short walk across the fields (and the river which is the county
boundary) from Flatford (and probably an easier place to find
lodgings). Suffolk once had many towns/villages wealthy from the wool
trade but when that changed several centuries ago there weren't many
people wealthy enough to tear down old buildings and put up new ones.
Hence many of the towns now cater to the tourist trade because they
haven't changed much since the 1500s (e.g., Lavenham). Also head
across the border to Norfolk to visit Thetford, hometown of Thomas
Paine (obAA).

Constable might well be great, but Turner is knock me over astounding.
I would give a link, but real paintings just don't look the same on
screens, you have to see them in person.

I know Turner does. I've been through the Tate Gallery twice-the last
time was eight years ago. Thirty years ago I was onboard HMS Discovery.
