Chen Han-seng, a pioneer of modern Chinese social science, has died at
the age of 107, outliving the leaders of the Communist party for which
he worked with enthusiasm during the revolution, but rejected in his
old age.
Through his research among China's exploited peasantry in the 1930s,
in between underground activities which forced him twice to flee
abroad, Chen concluded that only radical political change would solve
their plight. His work on how the Chinese peasant was exploited by the
twin forces of landlord usury and foreign economic penetration helped
to underpin Mao Zedong's strategy of relying on the "rural masses".
