Was John Lennon an atheist? I find it hard to believe that his song
'Imagine' could have been written by a theist. It is, after all, basically
an atheist theme song.

I would say that the song you mention would affirm his atheism. I
feel that John Lennon is perhaps the best person I can think of, (equal
only perhaps to Carl Sagan), to hold up to the public as examples of
what atheism today really is. Most of the brainwashed believers think
atheists are some sort of evil, morally depraved devil worshippers: John
and Carl are undisputable positive contributors to mankind and exemplary
examples of atheism.

ISTR that Chapman claims to have shot him because Lennon was a burnout
and his last album was a piece of *****. An opinion I can't find it in my
heart to disagree with, even if I think smoking Lennon for that was
somewhat over the top.

Why exactly am I obligated to tell polite lies because something
unfortunate happened to the man? Lennon was never the deep thinker some
people want to give him credit for being, and his albums were just as
much empty pop fluff as the ones McCartney put out subsequent to the
break-up of the Beatles. Lennon at the end spent nearly as much time
stupefied in his room as Brian Wilson did. He was a relic. He never
stopped spewing the mostly empty "peace and love and flowers, man"
prescription popular in the youth culture of the late sixties. It's so
diconnected from any reality I live in that it makes me want to puke.
Look, Chapman's shooting of Lennon was unnecessary, it was stupid, it
was crazy, it was not nice. Does that mean I have to cannonize some old
hippy douchebag? Hell no.

Yes and no. His early 70s songs were pretty explicitly atheistic, but later
on he proclaimed in interviews that he was open to other possibilities.
I find it hard to believe that his song
'Imagine' could have been written by a theist. It is, after all,
basically
an atheist theme song.
Check out "God" from the "Plastic Ono Band" LP if you haven't already.

Seems he believed in aliens....

John Lennon's encounter with aliens
December 7, 2004, 11:47:25
John Lennon once had an encounter with aliens, according to physic Uri
Geller.
The legendary Beatle, who was murdered in 1980, told Uri he was visited
by extra-terrestrials when he was in bed with wife Yoko Ono in 1975.
He explained to Uri, who told Britain's Sunday Telegraph newspaper: "I
was asleep in my bed, with Yoko in the Dakota Building.
And suddenly, I wasn't asleep. There was this blazing light, shining
through the door.
It was like someone was out there with searchlights, or the apartment
was on fire.
"I leapt out of bed and there were four people. They were little,
bug-like creatures, with big bug eyes and little bug mouths and they
were scuttling at me like roaches."
Lennon insisted he wasn't on drugs and definitely saw the 'aliens'.
He added: "I wasn't high. I've been high a lot of times, and I never saw
anything on LSD that was as weird as those f***in' bugs. "I wasn't
dreaming and I wasn't tripping."
Lennon also claimed the beings had given him a metal, egg-like object
before they left, which he gave to Geller, saying: "It's too weird.
If it's my ticket to another planet, I don't want to go there."
