On the evening of her 16th birthday in March 1968, Jung Chang lay in
bed secretly refining her first poem. As she struggled with her
thoughts, a noise at the door warned her that the family flat in
Sichuan was about to be raided by a group who suspected her father of
criticising Chairman Mao's regime. She rushed to the bathroom and
flushed her poem down the toilet. Poetry and written evidence of free
thought were illicit signs of political independence. 'I remember
thinking: if this is a socialist paradise, what is hell?' she has
recalled.
Nearly 40 years on, Chang's latest work is destined to cause her all
the trouble she averted that night. Her biography of Mao Tse-tung is to
be published a month from now, following a burst of international
publicity. As a result, the writer could find she is permanently
unwelcome in the country where she lived until she was 26.
