Jury orders reprimand, no jail for soldier |
Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer Jr. deserves a commendation, not a
reprimand. When will these bleeding-hearted liberals understand that this a
*war* we're engaged in. Those who oppose the war should have issues with our
elected officials, not our dedicated soldiers.
http://www.theconservativevoice.com/ap/article.html?mi=D8FAQJTO0&apc=9009
A military jury on Monday ordered a reprimand but no jail time for an Army
interrogator convicted of killing an Iraqi general by stuffing him headfirst
into a sleeping bag and sitting on his chest.
Chief Warrant Officer Lewis Welshofer Jr. also was ordered to forfeit $6,000
salary and was largely restricted to his barracks and workplace for 60 days.
Welshofer, 43, had originally been charged with murder and faced up to life
in prison. But on Saturday he was convicted instead of negligent homicide
and negligent dereliction of duty.
On the lesser charges, he had faced a maximum of three years and three
months in prison, a dishonorable discharge, loss of his pension and other
penalties.
After hearing the sentence reached by the jury of six Army officers,
Welshofer hugged his wife. Soldiers in the gallery _ many of whom had worked
with Welshofer and who had testified as character witnesses _ broke into
applause.

OK. If I accept your premise (and it's not unreasonable) who DID pull
the murder charge? Why weren't the commanding officers in front of
courts martial as well?
This is symptomatic of Bush's attitude to international law. His army
has no fear of consequences because they know their president will
defend them if anyone else tries to get them in front of a war-crimes court.
So, by a convoluted route, it DOES wind up back at the commander in chief.

He was convicted of killing the prisoner, but the jury (the UCMJ does
use juries) found that the death was not intentional. Hence, the
reprimand, reduction in rank, and golden boot out of the service.
No commanders were tried because no one could prove that the CWO was
ordered to do anything like what he did.

As far as I can tell, "moral relativism" is this: it's OK to for us to do it
to them but not OK for them to do it to us.
Thus, the killing of an unarmed "rag-head" in captivity goes unpunished and
maybe even applauded ("J Young" suggests a commendation) but for a
"rag-head" to kill one of us is unthinkably evil.
Sorry, I'm not buying it and I don't think Jesus would buy it, either.
It's:
"Do unto others as you would have them do unto you."
not:
"Let's do it to them before they do it to us."

Let's say Sunni Arab population is about 4 million (20% or so of a total
population of about 25 million).
Let's be real generous and say one hundred thousand of those are active
in the Resistance on a regular basis. Let's add another hundred thou as
"passive" or simply supportive but uninvolved.
Let's add both and bring it to a quarter million just to be safe, then
let's double that for yet extra safety at half a million.
That leaves at least three and a half million Sunni Arabs whose "hearts
and minds" could well be won over, should the invader actually really
align itself with its own rhetoric: "bringing democracy",
"nation-building", "helping Iraq", "saving lives from Saddam's
thuggery",.... all the nauseating, lying nonsense spewed by Bush and his
sycophants for the past three years.
Sorry episodes of the Lewis Welshofer Jr. kind only guarantee an
increase in the Resistance, more attacks on US troops and more and
better IEDs
Let's see if GI Joe getting his balls sheared off in an explosion while
on patrol in al-Anbar province shares your enthusiasm for "sarcasm"...!!

Oh, this is gonna go over real big with the Sunni Iraqis.
Yeah, it will probably make those Sunnis not like us.
/sarcasm
Let's say Sunni Arab population is about 4 million (20% or so of a total
population of about 25 million).
Let's be real generous and say one hundred thousand of those are active
in the Resistance on a regular basis.
Resistance? LOL
Nice lies. Muslims terrorize the rest of the world if they're not
fellated 24/7. Welcome to Earth.
Sorry episodes of the Lewis Welshofer Jr. kind only guarantee an
increase in the Resistance, more attacks on US troops and more and
better IEDs
Still blaming everyone on Earth for terroism except the terrorists, I
see. Continue panicking.
Let's see if GI Joe getting his balls sheared off in an explosion while
on patrol in al-Anbar province shares your enthusiasm for "sarcasm"...!!

So you think that the USA should not respect the very same treaties
they sign and force other countries to sign? What's the word again...
ah yes... hypocrit!

Listen you chickenhawk son-of-a-*****, warfare has rules. This may
come as a shock, but we follow those rules.
One of the biggest set of rules concerns the care of prisoners. We do
not abuse prisoners. We do not beat prisoners. And we certainly do
not kill prisoners. Why? Because we are supposed to be better than
our enemies.
During WWII, Japanese troops and sailors expected to be executed if
they were captured. When they were instead treated with kindness,
many changed their minds about what they were taught about Americans.
Those former EPWs went on to be some of postwar Japan's leaders.
Everytime we do something stupid like this, it's nothing but grist for
the radical Muslim mill. They mullahs can point to this incident and
say "see? They are out to kill us all!"
But since you are a chickenhawk, this means nothing to you.

That is just not true!

Agreed.
We do not abuse prisoners. We do not beat prisoners. And we certainly do
not kill prisoners.
Either my irony meter isn't working or something's wrong here. The US
military certanly DO do all these things and a lot worse.
Why? Because we are supposed to be better than our enemies.
I think the whole world has seen that you are not better than the
enemies, and in fact are a whole lot worse at times with the total and
utter disregard for international law. The lies comming from the
president's office don't help either re. special rendition. "We don't
torture people" What wasn't said was "and we don't hand them over to
people who do"
Everytime we do something stupid like this, it's nothing but grist for
the radical Muslim mill. They mullahs can point to this incident and

They'd be correct too. Look at what happened when the airforce went and
bombed Pakistan a couple of weeks ago.
