I am led to understand that during Lent you are to purify yourself, by
giving up things you might otherwise enjoy. You seem to really enjoy
your religion so perhaps you should simply give it up for the next 40
days. According to your religion that would be pleasing to God.
Give up religion for Lent. It is the sensible thing to do.

Seems unlikely, it's seems far more likely you sat through about 40
minutes of other ritual first.

There isn't an England v Australia Test on at the moment, afaik (I
don't really follow the cricket).

Dust is generally a good bit smaller than I am, and with a lower
water content.

Think of it as a crosshair, & practice ducking out of 'the line of

It's more fun being an atheist. After carving up and roasting an

Massive repitition of parayers, a deliberate sense that the priest is
powerful, and droning hymns all designed to produce a cult-like
trance.
Then you go to confession, and tell someone everything you've done in
the past week, and get told that he can get you out of it.. in return
for more droning of payers.

Man, that brought it all back. I remember that crap from when I was a
kid. The whole group had to stand, I'd always hang back a bit to see
what would happen. Close your eyes to pray - nope, more fun to watch the
others, knowing full well they had no idea I was looking at them. I
don't remember if Lutherans ate jeebus crackers. Maybe at a few special
ceremonies. I remember liking the taste and wanting another.
What happens if you eat too many Jeebus Crackers? Do you get more heaven

It's always funny when my family ends up at another church during holidays
and other group events. Each place has its own rhythm and timing
established via habit, so you see everybody standing up and sitting down at
the right times, except for this one group of jackasses in the corner...
What happens if you eat too many Jeebus Crackers? Do you get more heaven

Beats me. I was always worried about getting one of the pointy triangle
guys. They weren't as good as the round ones.
(I think I was about fifteen by the time my parents figured out that no, it
really wasn't going to work on me, so that was the end of that. I had TV
shows on Saturday, so I was glad to get an hour back. But in the meantime,
man that was annoying...)

I've never attended a mass.
Do they tell you to turn your brain off at the door, or is it just
something you do automatically?
it is more an opening of the mind - try it some time - you may like it

I have attended quite a few Catholic masses...mostly at St. John the Baptist RC
Church in the Riverside section of Buffalo and quite a few when I was younger
and a student at Calasanctius Prep school (now defunct due to internecine
warfare between the Diocese of Buffalo and the Piarist Fathers) . Nice music,
pretty building, meaningless ritual. I did not feel like my mind was
particularly opened. In fact, it was being a student at a private Catholic
school which opened my mind sufficiently enough to realize that I was an
atheist.

Ah, so familiar...my mind was opened up by the Jesuits at
good ol' Canisius High...I suspect that not a few of whom
were atheists.

The Jebbies at Brooklyn Prep started me thinking too. I think that you
might be right about some of them being atheists. Certainly some were
unconventional. I don't know if I mentioned this in the group before,
but one of my teachers was Daniel Berrigan who in the 60's became famous
as a peace activist. (Catonsville Nine.) He taught us religion and was a
strict disciplinarian, kind of a pain, actually.

At my college we were dragged over to the next door church one a week for a
service.
The priest there conducted his service in a monotone mixture of Latin and Eglish.
It sounded awful and never appealed to me. Checking my piano keyboard his
rendition was done at a constant A flat. After about a year of this I asked the
reason - the only answer I could get was 'This is High Church'. From that moment
on I began my steady swing away from superstition to the high sunny uplands of
atheism, and goodbye to 'High Church'.

Dangerous - do it long enough and you begin to believe it~
