starting a (potentially) nuclear war and nothing to gain. Dumbya,
in triggering Armageddon and thus bringing about the Second
Coming, has nothing to lose and everything to gain....

``All of the cities east of Xian'' includes pretty much every
major population center, including the capital, every port, and
basically the whole of Chinese industry and infrastructure. In
short, he's saying that China is willing to die for Taiwan.

This is empty saber-rattling.

Oh, to be sure, Taiwan is a most troublesome problem. I very much
it'll ever come to open warfare. If it does, both sides will be
most careful to make sure it remains a sea battle. Even clashes of
foot soldiers on land will be unlikely, because, these days, that
frequently means dropping things like FAEs and daisy cutters from
heavy bombers to prepare landing zones. And those big bombs look
rather like small nukes, complete with mushroom cloud. Some
excitable corporal reports seeing a mushroom cloud to an excitable
colonel...no, no American president or congress would risk having
ICBMs launched at Los Angeles over such a small thing, and no
Chinese president or congress would risk having ICBMs launched at
Beijing, either.

What Mr. Zhu's statements boil down to is, ``If you don't do
anything, we won't do anything. And make sure you don't do
anything!'' It's MAD all over again, is all.
