That is about some individuals, and you will always find individuals who are
outstanding.
They certainly end up more valued under our system than under the communist
system.
Look at Mikhail Timofeevich Kalashnikov, the inventor of the AK 47 who still
eeks an existence in a modest flat in Moscow, and has recently taken to
supplementing his pension by making decorative swords.

There is nothing unbiblical about the term "my *****", John.
Your country has been favoring the Chinese, who's abortion culture and
infant limitation policies mean that there are 100 million missing girls
(fewer girls than boys) in that country and that is a holocaust of girls.

"The United States is the most religious of all the industrialized
nations. Forty-four percent of Americans attend church once a week,
compared with 27 percent in Britain, 21 percent in France, 16
percent in Australia, and 4 percent in Sweden. Yet violent crime is
not less common in the United States--it's more common. The murder
rate here is six times higher than the rate in Britain, seven times
higher than in France, five times higher than in Australia, and five
times higher than in Sweden. Japan, where Christianity has almost no
adherents, has less violent crime than almost any country....Within
the 50 states, there is no evidence that a God-fearing populace
equals a law-abiding populace. The Bible Belt has more than its
share of both praying and killing. Louisiana has the highest
churchgoing rate in the country, but its murder rate is more than
twice the national average. The same pattern generally holds in the
rest of the South."

You know what, Davey? Abortion is legal in the U.S. also. the big
difference is that China knows it has too many people, and is trying
to do something about it by limiting the number of children a couple
can have. That runs into problems when the culture favors one sex over
another. Ultimately it will lead to a population with far more men than
women. Which means that the birth rate will drop tremendously, and the
population will fall accordingly.
What mercy will they show others?
I don' know. What mercy have others shown China?
Do you know how many problems Christian believers have had in that
country?
So what? China is under no oblgation to allow anybody in to preach
what to them is pure evil. Many of the problems that China has faced
in the past couple of hundred years had Christian Missionaries along
for the ride.
And my opinion is that whenver someone decides that they are going to
be a misisonary then they deserve all the abuse they get.
This policy of making everyone a bit richer so they will love us is
blinkered, naive, and not taking account of the sinfulness of man. It is
feeding the viper at one's own breast.
Belive it or not, if you consider that the "sinful nature of man" is to
a large extent about being richer, then China should be happy that we
are doing it.

This is not an official Chinese position, so far as I'm aware. Perhaps you
could explain how they should control a population as large as there's.
Their own people.
What mercy will they show others?
As long as they show a bit more than Christians have historically shown
other people, I'll be satisfied.

Considering the way the Christian West treated the Chinese over the last two
centuries, I have a hard time blaming them.

Well, the West could always behave as it once did, but then again, that's
why the West and Christianity are so despised in some quarters.

I think his point was that while it is similar to the cold war
situation, the western nations had a near total trade embargo and a
total technology exchange embargo against the evil communist countries
under Soviet influence. On the other side, since the moment the Chinese
were willing to market their cheap labour force and profits were to be
made, China is regarded as a welcome trade partner in all Western
countries.
Here is a little link:
http://houston.china-consulate.org/eng/zt/zmgx/t63764.htm
2003: China is the US third largest trade partner. It could be further
up by now.
Never mind the communist dictatorship, the exploitation of the workers
in many Chinese factories, the executions, the total absence of basic
rights, like freedom of speech, money could be made. Never mind that the
cheap chinese labour actually replaced US or European labour. Never mind
that there is a trade embargo agains Cuba, because it is a communist
dictatorship. No profit in trade with Cuba, big profit in trade with
China. The Europeans are thinking about lifting the weapons embargo,
'cause profits can be made. First we help them to grow their economy,
then we help them to take our jobs, next we arm them. Same stupidity,
all over the world.
And now, a Chinese general walks along and tells us that he will nuke
the US if they interfere in Chinese politics.
Do you see the difference to the cold war now?

Let's see. On one hand we have a nation (us) with a long history of trade
with and interference with the politics of another country. And that
country tells us to keep our hands off its' politics?
Yes, you are right, there is a major difference between one country
where we did not interfere, and another country where we consistantly
interfered, to the point of having a very specialized divison of both
the Navy and the Marines stationed over there. And as is totally typical
we supported not the leaders who would promote the welfare of their
citizens, rather we supported those who would do the best job of turning
their people into slaves for us.
While life may not be as good under the communists in China as it is here
in the U.S., it is far better than it was when we had our hands in it.

A nice summary. And I agree, the situation in China today is better than
it was any number of years ago. Economically. For a sufficiently large
number of people that it counts.
Politically it did not change since the communists came into power. OK,
there are no large waves of 'cleaning' campaigns, or things like the
cultural revolution.
It is a simple communist dictatorship. Straight from the manual.
And *our* way of dealing with it declares all our talking about freedom,
democracy and human rights a lie. All this things are forgotten if we
can make a profit. It's not just the Chinese that make the profit, it's
us too. Those who run the trading companies profit in money, those who
consume the products get the cheap stuff we love so much, the Chinese
got jobs, and some of them a share of the profits. The communist party
has complete control and is, well, partying. Some people in the west
lost their jobs, and some people in China loose their health in
dangerous fabrication facilities.
Now your country just lost around 1800 of it's citizens to bring
democracy to another country, and mine refused to contribute to this
because we are against war. Yours is Chinas biggest trade partner, and
my government would like to sell weapons to China to fix a stagnating
economy.
Somehow I think the western democracies are currently run by a bunch of
inconsistent idiots.

Your point is? Taiwan has been protected by the U.S. since the chinese

Chinese history is no bowl of cherries. That's for sure. Before the
communists, many leaders were warlords and hoodlums. One needs to realize
that communism represents freedom to people who are no better than
slaves.

And that's the point, really. Sure Communism has done a lot of nastiness,
but let's not forget why Nationalism and Communism arose in the first place.
The West went out of its collective way to undermine the Imperial government
that had, in one way or another, stood for millennia. It imposed grossly
unfair treaties, and Christian missionaries in their own way were working
against central authority. By the time the Chinese finally came to realize
just how horribly they had been damaged by the West, the game was up. The
Chiang Kai-Shek and Chairman Mao were the products of a China that had been
abused, so perhaps Davey should spend a little time reviewing, in
particular, the evils of British involvement in China and ponder that for a
while.

Pretty much, and we have a Royal Proclamation from good ol' George III, a
Constitution Act of 1982 and some important Supreme Court rulings that are
finally forcing us to deal with the nastiness (not to mention some churches
that are paying through the nose for their part in abuse of native
children).
So don't come at me with what Britain did, matey.
At least George III's proclamation set the precedent that the native peoples
of British North America must be dealt with fairly. Of course, it's taken
over two centuries for us to do it, but there was no such good will for the
Chinese, who saw their wealth drowned in a sea of opium, and the British
actually fight a war to make sure that opium kept on coming.
You don't have clean hands yourself.
Never said I did, but the fact remains that the West essentially created the
China you see today, and that China has no trust for the West or for
Christianity, and it has every reason not to trust either. Both have been
producers of many sorrows. So before you blame China, best look at what the
West did over there.

1. Russia has about an eighth of the population of China, with no
pressure on the land they had available.
On the other hand, Russia had, and still has, more nuclear weapons than
any country in the world, except possibly the U.S.
2. We never took control and sat on a Russian speaking country - and we
still don't, unless you count Georgia and Latvia, which have sizeable
minorioties.
On the other hand, Russia has a very long history of being invaded by
European countries, such as France and Germany. And European history
is full of one country attacking another. Mother Russia was very
paranoid about being invaded. to the point that they built up a
buffer zone consisting of almost every country between the middle of
Germany and the Russian border.
3. Russia is essentially a country with a European, post-Christian or
Christian substrate which can relate to the same ideas as us.
Except that Russians did not trust any European.
4. Russians are not in the main racially disctinct from the whites in
Europe and America
5. I don't remember them threatening us as directly as this general is.
Hmm, you must be very young. Kruschev said that Russia would bury the
U.S. And we lived from the start of the 1950's until the Berlin wall
fell in the late 80's under a very decided threat of nuclear war.
We had an escalating nuclear arsenal in direct response to Russia's.
It was not just a few words from Russia. It was a very real threat.
6. They have much better technology than was available at the height of
the cold war.
Which means that they can use smaller nuclear warheads. One of the biggest
threats of a nuclear war was simply the fact that in order to win
a war, one nation would have to launch first, and launch a lot of very
large weapons to ensure that they could take out the other sides weapons.
With the better technology, the weapons can be smaller because they
can come a lot closer to the targets.
7. They are not crippled by a classic communist approach to the economy,
they have allowed parts of capitalism to work for them\
Which means that China is dependant upon the rest of the world.
Is that enough distinctions for you?
Among the distinctions are: China does not have a nuclear powered
submarine navy sitting off of our coast, waiting to launch missiles
into our heartland, China also has a very small nuclear arsenal. China
may have a large population, but the vast majority of them are not
ready to fight a foreign war.
Or is your head in the sand too far to hear what I am saying?
I suggest you go back and consider what the U.S. went through with
Russia from the end of WWII until the end of the 80's. And then take
a good look at China and their policies, and then tell us that China
is as big of a threat as the U.S.S.R was.

And yet, the article contains its own refutation:
"We Chinese will prepare ourselves for the destruction of all of
the cities east of Xian," [Mr. Zhu] said. "Of course, the
Americans will have to be prepared that hundreds of cities will
be destroyed by the Chinese."
``All of the cities east of Xian'' includes pretty much every
major population center, including the capital, every port, and
basically the whole of Chinese industry and infrastructure. In
short, he's saying that China is willing to die for Taiwan.
This is empty saber-rattling.
Oh, to be sure, Taiwan is a most troublesome problem. I very much
it'll ever come to open warfare. If it does, both sides will be
most careful to make sure it remains a sea battle. Even clashes of
foot soldiers on land will be unlikely, because, these days, that
frequently means dropping things like FAEs and daisy cutters from
heavy bombers to prepare landing zones. And those big bombs look
rather like small nukes, complete with mushroom cloud. Some
excitable corporal reports seeing a mushroom cloud to an excitable
colonel...no, no American president or congress would risk having
ICBMs launched at Los Angeles over such a small thing, and no
Chinese president or congress would risk having ICBMs launched at
Beijing, either.
What Mr. Zhu's statements boil down to is, ``If you don't do
anything, we won't do anything. And make sure you don't do
anything!'' It's MAD all over again, is all.
To be brutally honest, I'm much more afraid of Dumbya lighting the
match than the Chinese. The Chinese have everything to lose by
starting a (potentially) nuclear war and nothing to gain. Dumbya,
in triggering Armageddon and thus bringing about the Second
Coming, has nothing to lose and everything to gain....
Cheers,
b&
