One of the opening skirmishes in the State Board of Education's battle over
whether science standards should require creation to be taught alongside
evolution will be held next week.
The board will consider drafting guidelines for teaching about religion, which
would help public schools deal with the topic without violating the separation
of church and state, said board member Bill Wagnon, who suggested creating the
guidelines.
But Wednesday's discussion has close ties to the coming science debate.
"I've been motivated by a deep-seated concern that people who want to have
religion covered in school have gone about it in the wrong way by trying to get
it into science standards," Wagnon said.
As a history professor at Washburn University, Wagnon said he often talks about
religion in his American history classes.
If religion is going to be taught in public schools, Wagnon said, it should
happen in social studies or a comparative religion class. In his view, the
theory of intelligent design belongs in theology class, not science class, he
said.

My prediction is that the DI will be trying harder to keep ID out of
consideration. They can't afford more exposure of their scam. ID proponents
should be on the look out for how they go about making their claims without
claiming anything scientific about ID. If it is pursued again it will be with
a group that isn't ignorant of how bogus ID is. The dishonest creationists on
the board will have to go with the "teach the controversy" scam. Any
ID/creationist proponent should realize by now just what a scam it is. Without
ID, what controversy are they talking about, and what do they intend to
accomplish? Obfuscation isn't education. If the creationists on the board go
forward after being educated by the ID scam artists themselves, what does that
say about the future of creationism and the people that support it. Remember
that these are the Kansas creationist Christians that are on record as claiming
that Christians that do not think that evolution is a threat are not real
Christians. What does it show when the self proclaimed "real" Christians have
to be so dishonest? If they go with the "teach the controversy" scam you know
for a fact that they are no longer ignorant of the bogousity of ID. Just like
the creationists on the Ohio board were no longer ignorant, but went forward
anyway and tried to sneak in their creationist beliefs using web pages.
Does anyone that supports these types of people have a good reason why the
dishonesty exhibited by creationists like in Ohio is acceptable? Why will it
be acceptable in Kansas and the next place it comes up? Remember that these
are the guys that are claiming the science isn't being honest. What is honest
about the ID or "teach the controversy" scams as they are being employed?
