Kansas: Evolution opinions evenly divided |
From the article:
---------------------------------------------------------
People on both sides of the evolution debate made impassioned pleas
Tuesday night before representatives of the committee charged with
reviewing and rewriting Kansas science standards.
The more than 50 people who spoke were about evenly divided in arguing
for and against revisions to the committee's recommendations. The
revisions have been proposed by eight of the 26 committee members.
Committee co-chair Steve Case estimated that about 360 people attended
the hearing at Schlagle High School Auditorium in Kansas City, Kan. It
was the first of four public hearings being held this month across the
state to help the committee prepare its final recommendations for the
State Board of Education.
The revisions would open the door to questioning the theory of
evolution by permitting teachers to discuss evidence for and against
the theory in a neutral way and making it clear that evolution is a
theory, not a fact.
Several professionals and students in the science field warned against
impeding Kansas' biosciences initiative by de-emphasizing evolution in
the schools.
