Britain produced some of the world's great physicists but few
schoolchildren want to study the subject now. Simon Singh explains why
we should worry
Tuesday November 22, 2005
The Guardian
We are nearing the end of the "World Year of Physics", otherwise known
as Einstein Year, as it is the centenary of his annus mirabilis in
which he made three incredible breakthroughs, including special
relativity. In fact, it was 100 years ago yesterday that he published
the most famous equation in the history of physics: E=mc2.
But instead of celebrating, physicists are in mourning after a report
showed a dramatic decline in the number of pupils studying physics at
school. The number taking A-level physics has dropped by 38% over the
past 15 years, a catastrophic meltdown that is set to continue over the
next few years. The report warns that a shortage of physics teachers
and a lack of interest from pupils could mean the end of physics in
state schools. Thereafter, physics would be restricted to only those
students who could afford to go to posh schools.

Too much emphasis on vocational subjects (wtff is a vocational 'A'
level for? I thought NVQ level 3 was the equivalent anyway) and league
tables mean that softer subjects are chosen over the pure sciences.
It's a damned sight easier to get an 'A' level in Media Studies,
Drama, Tourism, Sport or <shudder> Business Adminisatration than it is
Physics, Chemistry or Maths because it is virtually impossible to make
those subjects as intellectually challenging.
One thought does occur to me. I don't believe in coincidences,
suddenly, everybody's talking about a fuel crisis, and discussing
whether the only solution might be more nuclear power, and suddenly,
it is noticed that we have a shortage of physicists. Hmmm....

Right! Don't worry about a shortage of physicists. While the
number of physics students is shrinking rapidly in the US and UK, it
is increasing equally rapid in places like China, Korea, and India.
We will have plenty of physicists in the future.
They just won't be here.

(The same is true of stem-cell research. Just because it is
outlawed in the US doesn't mean that it has stopped worldwide. In
fact it is a high-priority and well-funded research area in

Numbers do not count as heavily as quality. They were making the same
hysterical judgements back in the days of the "space race". The Soviet
school system was turning out 5 engineers and physicists to our 3.

That Japanese turn out more engineers per capita than the U.S. does but

And before you tell me how South Korea is ahead of us in genetics, the
work has been spearheaded by Americans and Europeans (mostly) because

Bob: I checked on Korea's number one superstar, the Director of the
lab that cloned human embryos for the first time -- Dr. Hwang,
Woo-Suk.
His complete biography is located at:
http://www.rmte.org/download/final_program_pdf/Speaker_CV_high.pdf
He attended the College of Veterinary Medicine at Seoul National
University (SNU) from '72 through '77, receiving a Bachelor's in
Veterinary Medicine.
He did his graduate work also at Seoul National University,
receiving his MS and PhD (1982) in "Theriogenology" (defined as "a
branch of veterinary medicine concerned with veterinary obstetrics
and with the diseases and physiology of animal reproductive
systems.")
He has won a *long* list of awards and serves on many committees. He
serves a Professor at SNU.
As far as I can tell, his only venture overseas was to spend some
time in northern Japan -- he was a visiting fellow at Hokkaido
University for about a year ('84 - '85).
It is easy to say that our (US) 'quality' is better -- more
creative, etc. They steal 'our' ideas.
I lived in Seoul for about 3 1/2 years working with SNU faculty and
many professionals from several Korean Research organizations.
I also lived in Japan for about 8 years. One of my jobs was to
negotiate patent licenses with Japanese and Korean companies. (That
is where the manufacturer *pays you* for the right to use your
patents.)
Your thinking, I am afraid, comes from post WWII activities when the
Japanese were copying many foreign products (and, BTW, making them
better in the process.)
It's true you can buy a $25 'Rolex' in Seoul today.
Tomorrow you will be able to buy a $25 stem cell.

No doubt. Or we will have a change of administration and policy and
bring back gentics to the U.S.
The Bush administrations have had a chilling effect on research in the
next big growth area. An unfortunate policty, to be sure.
However all this may be, the bulk of genetic technology originates in
North America and Europe. If government make bad policy the scientist
will simply move to where they can do their thing.
The same thing happened back in the 1930's. The Germans drove scientists
out of Europe (many of the Jews) and the U.S. inherited as a gift the
most advanced particle physicists on the planet. Which is why we got an
A-bomb and the Germans did not.
I see a similar thing happening in the field of genetics. We drive it
out or surpress it and it goes elsewhere to flourish. History repeats
itself.

That is what happens when politicians manage matters. The space program
was allowed to fall into rot and ruin. Russian hardware is still crap.
They are notarious for poor quality control. Would you buy a Russian
automobile?
Anyway, the point is that the U.S. has -sufficient- human resources to
finance and organize a successful space effort. The total number of
engineers educated in the system does not determine the outcome.
In this country we generally get what we are willing to pay for or
invest in. We have a lot of people doing leading edge work in computer
applications. That is where the buck$$$ are.
I am more impressed by the fact that the Chinese are loosening up in the
area of economic investment and development. No more of those dreadful
Stalinesque five and seven years plans. The Chinese have even discovered
unemployment as a necessary side effect of rapid economic growth. To the
extent that the Chinese adopt free market approaches to that extent they
will be successful. Happily for the Chinese, they have gotten past the
marxist-leninist nonsense and have morphed into a typical authoritarian
thug kleptocracy.

Public elementary education (so called) in the U.S. is a failure and an

Actually, in the white population the literacy rate was close to ninety
percent. Why? The churches took care of most of the schooling and taught
reading and writing so people could read their bible. The negro
population (particularly in the South) was kept illiterate and ignorant.
In the slave states it was against the law to teach a Negro slave how to
read.
Communities raised funds voluntarily to provide teachers and preachers
for their kids.
This was all pre-Horace Mann. Horace Mann was very impressed by Prussia
and thought the U.S. should have a state funded, state run school system
in which attendence was mandated by law. Just like Prussia. I wonder if
Horace Mann wanted American kids to learn how to click their heels and
pledge allegiance to the Leader. The result is that parents who can not
afford to opt out are required to deliver their children into the hands
of strangers some of whom will bugger their kids. Not a good system.
When the teachers are not abusing their young charges sexually, they are
busy screwing up the kids mentally and philosophically. That is why the
U.S. has a functional illiteracy rate close to forty percent.
I was lucky. I was able to get my kids out of the public school system
early. It cost me a bundle, but it was worth it.
