You didn't hear this from me, says Vivienne Parry, but scientists love
a good gossip. In fact, it has become integral to the way research
works

There are things that the public assume scientists don't do. Read
Heat. Gossip. Watch Blind Date. Have an addiction to Mystic Meg. Hmm.
It's time I lifted the lid on science's guilty pleasures.
It is true that some scientists, mostly geologists and chemists, are
true to image and choose to spend their spare time morris dancing or
drinking real ale. Clearly, they don't get out much and can't be held
accountable for their pastimes, which are in any case not secret.
Proud, loud and incoherent is my experience. Chemists cook (life's
just one long experiment) and music is a big thing for scientists
across the field. Apparently, banjo playing is rife amongst physicists
- one of life's big mysteries, up there with whether radioactive cats
have 18 half-lives or whether statisticians are standard normal
deviates.
