When Kentucky Fried Chicken decided to make a long-dead national hero
the star of their latest TV commercial in China, they expected it to
help them in their battle for supremacy in the burgeoning Western-style
fast food market in China. Instead, KFC became the latest foreign
company to be accused of showing a lack of respect for Chinese culture
in its eagerness to push its products in the world's fastest-growing
economy.
The controversy over the ad, which features an aged Taoist
monkproclaiming a chickenburger to be a "masterpiece", is the latest
example of a growing backlash against Western influences.

No. It's an example of the generic sociopathic ignorance of the rest
of the world.

Not really. U.S. companies are always using figures from America's
past in disrespectful ways, so it's not ignorance of foreign
sensibilities. It's just another instance of going for the bucks no
matter what they have to do, or think they should do.

No. It's unthinking ignorance.

That's pretty much what I said, I simply added added the clarification
that's it's not ignorance of *other (non-US) cultures*, but of all
cultures and all sensibilities. They put their profits ahead of
everything.

Mmm... "Sociopathic"?
More like racist parochial xenophobia, if you ask me.

Not consciously racist. More than parochial - it's the inability to
grasp that everybody else doesn't think the way we do. Their views,
customs, mores etc simply aren't relevant, and we blame them rather
than ourselves.
The rest of the world sees it all the time in their relationships with
US companies, government and even too many individuals.
