KINKAKU-JI TEMPLE |
A Guide to Kinkaku-ji Temple
HISTORY : Kinkaku-ji (Temple of the Golden Pavilion)
which is properly called Rokuon-ji belongs to the Rinzai
sect of Zen Buddhism. In 1397 Yoshimitsu, the third shogun
of Ashikaga, bought this site from Saionji Kintsune, who had
enjoyed it as his villa up until that time calling it Kitayamadai
Palace. Yoshimitsu changed the name to Kitayamaden
Palace. and added a new golden pavilion and deep pond
around it. He enjoyed the rest of his life here after having
retired from the Shogunate, and at the time devoted his
life to the development of Japanese culture through trade
with China.
After Yoshimitsu's death this palace was made a Zen
temple by his will and Muso Kokushi (National Zen Master)
was invited to become the founder of the temple.
BUILDINGS : The present main hall was established by
Emperor Gominoo. A sitting statue of Bodhisattva Kwannon
by Jocho, which had been enthusiastically worshipped by
Princess Tofuku-monin, is enshrined in the main hall.
The golden pavilion formally called Shariden retains its
original form though it was rebuilt in 1955. Architectually
speaking, this pavilion is supposed to be representative of
the Muromachi period. This elegant harmonious building
consists of three types of architecture. The first floor is the
Shinden-zukuri, the palace style of the Fujiwara period. It
is called Hosui-in. The second is Buke-zukuri, the Samurai
house style of the Kamakura period, called Choon-do, and
the third is the Karayo (Chinese) style (or Zen temple style)
and is called Kukkyo-cho. Attached to the west side of the
first floor is a narrow porch called Sosei where Yoshimitsu
used to wash his hands. Both the second and the third floor
are painted with gold over lacquer and the roof upon which
a phoenix settles is thatched with shingles.
GARDEN : Rokuon-ji (Kinkaku-ji) garden is regarded as
a special historical relic containing a beautiful pond called
Kyoko-chi (mirror pond) which contains many large and small
islands scattered here and there. It represents a harmonious
landscape with Mount Kinugasayama located at the western
side of Kinkaku-ji.
MISCELLANEOUS : North of the pavilion there are several
memorial places such as Ginkasen Spring, Gankasui Pond,
Ryumontaki Falls, and so on. In the upper part of the garden,
you will find a typical tea-house called Sekkatei where
Emperor Gominoo drank tea in olden days. On the way back
to the exit of the temple, you will also find the small Fudo-do
Shrine where stone Fudomyoo (Acara) is enshrined as a
guardian of the temple.

An open flower.
How clear it is, the note of singing birds.
The clouds are calm, the waters blue...

Woods are colourful.
Valleys deep and rapid streams with spray.
Moon light is clear
In softly breathing wind.

Alas, I have misplaced my 70's copy.
Or perhaps it decided to go on a tour by itself?
