Klu KLux Klan Republican or Democrat? |
The Klan as far as I know was probably 100% democratic until the civil
rights act of 1964 IIRC.
Most or all Klansmen left at that point and went to the republican
party.
The remaining Klansmen left in the 1980's to join a sympathetic
president, Ronald Reagan.
Is this more or less correct?

Although I'm certainly no fan of Reagan, I think it is a bit unfair to put this
on him.
The two presidents who are primarily reponsible for this are Johnson, who by
signing the Civil Rights Act of 1964 alienated the Dixiecrats and tied the
Democratic party to the Civil Rights movement; and Nixon, whose "Southern
Strategy" deliberately embraced white and Christian supremacist elements in the
South, effectively bringing the Dixiecrats into the GOP. By the time Reagan was
elected in 1980, anti-American Christian-supremacist southerners were the
dominant power in the Republican Party and remain so to this day.

Let's not forget the reps who switched parties, such as Jesse Helms.
Helms was a big supporter of the South African apartheid regime, btw,
perhaps more importantly than Reagan.
