Casey Byers was with the Iowa National Guard's 224th Engineer
Battalion, which arrived in Iraq in January. His daughter was born in
Ames shortly thereafter. Byers died June 11 south of Ramadi, Iraq,
when a bomb detonated under his armored Humvee. He was the 28th Iowan
to die in Iraq since the war began in March 2003...
More than 600 people turned out Wednesday for Byers' funeral, held at
the Iowa National Guard Armory in Denison...
About 50 yards away from the funeral, six protesters held signs that
said such things as "God blew up the troops." All six were relatives
of the Rev. Fred Phelps of Westboro Baptist Church in Kansas. They
contend that God is punishing the United States for bombing Phelps'
church a decade ago.
The group has held similar protests at soldiers' funerals in Idaho,
New Hampshire, Wisconsin and Illinois. It plans to go next to
Kentucky.

Sick. I think the war is a travesty, but I don't hold it against the
soldiers. Quite the opposite, I think we are wasting their sense of
honor, duty and patriotism. This is a truly scarce resource. Stupidity
of the Fred Phelps type is all to common.

What, and not for loving fags? I'm surprised that Phelps could go
away from his central message for this.

Phelps doesn't even count as a right-wing Christian: His rhetoric is so
out of control that even Jerry Falwell has condemned him. I try not to
pay too much attention to Phelps. In the words of the man's own son,
Phelps is "addicted to hate". Personally, I just think he's bonkers.
The man is best marginalized and ignored; he certainly doesn't deserve
to be taken seriously. That said though, I certainly agree that,
regardless of how you feel about the war, picketing the funeral of a
soldier that was KIA is simply disgraceful.

Oh good. I'll quote him then when it suits my purposes to prove
"conservatives" hate this or that. Let me put this down in my

Yea, you do that.
Especially if the person is a college professor, famous writer,
newspaper reporter or won an Academy Award. Lots of conservative
loons have those jobs.
