Preacher gets 30 years for sexual acts

DELAND -- A judge sentenced a self-proclaimed evangelist to 30 years
in prison Wednesday, noting he justified sexual acts on a teenage girl
by perversions of Biblical teachings.
The long prison term, 14 years more than recommended under state
sentencing guidelines, is further justified by Charles Balfe's lack of
remorse for the attacks on a girl who was forced to live in a virtual
concentration camp, Circuit Judge James Clayton said.
Balfe, 61, maintains his innocence and spent most of an hour during
his sentencing hearing Wednesday trying to blame the girl for his
troubles. Balfe also testified he is an ordained minister who has
given many years of service to religious and social causes.
"The slant that's put on different things, my behavior, is just that.
Slant," said Balfe, who was also sentenced to 30 years' probation as a
designated sexual predator after he serves his sentence.
In February, Balfe was found guilty of two counts of sexual battery on
a child older than 12, but younger than 18.
Balfe's victim, now a 21-year-old married woman, still suffers weekly
nightmares about the Draconian discipline and sexual abuse she
suffered at Balfe's hands, her husband said. And it was particularly
difficult for her to explain prior to their marriage why she wasn't a
virgin, he added.
"I will never, ever be completely free of what Mr. Balfe did to me,
what he took from me," the victim said in a statement to the court
Wednesday.
During Balfe's trial, witnesses portrayed him as a man who used
physical violence, death threats and Bible lectures to keep children
quiet about his sexual attacks.
He used the story of Lot in the book of Genesis to convince the victim
to have sex with him when she was 15. In the biblical story, two
daughters confined to a cave with their father give him wine and have
sex with him.
Several members of a DeLand church that Balfe attended gave character
testimony on his behalf Wednesday, all saying they couldn't believe he
committed such acts.
"I wouldn't hesitate to leave my grandchildren in his care," said Rita
Cook, a family friend and fellow church member at First Christian
Church.
Balfe was not a minister at the church, but he ran his own Web site
where he preached about marriage, divorce and dating issues.
The trials may not be over for Balfe, who is also charged with three
counts of capital sexual battery against a second victim, and one
count of a lewd and lascivious act against a third victim.
No trial date has been set for those cases, said Linda Pruitt,
spokeswoman for the Volusia County State Attorney's Office.
