He could still be around because the gang that has the best chance to oust
him is so busy trying to "out-liberal" each other they will forget that
most voters don't want an extreme liberal OR an extreme conservative
running the show. If the Dems think that the ticket to the Oval Office is
to rally the support of all those who blame Bush for the mess in Iraq,
they are going to be in for a BIG disappointment.

When the hell did Lieberman become a liberal? He's just as fanatic right-wing
as most of the GOP administration. Anyone remember the wide-eyed, fanatical
McCarthylike rant he gave during the 2000 campaign in support of censorship?
I'm not sure that ANY of the current list of major Dem candidates can be called
"extreme liberal" with the possible exception of Kucinich. With most we're just
getting the difference between Bush and Bush-lite.

Not to be too picky here but nowhere near half of America voted for him.
About half of the people who voted pulled the lever for Bush (still less
than for Gore of course) but only about 45% of Americans eligible to vote
actually voted. So, more like 25% of America voted for Bush in 2000.

I agree with Jeff. In the last TWO elections, less than half the
registered voters bothered to vote, given the poor quality of the Repub
and Dem candidates. I just wish that the 50% who didn't vote at all would
have voted for third-party candidates. Perhaps that would give the Repubs
and Dems the kick-in-the-***** that they so sorely need to alert them to the
fact that mainstream America does not want ideologic extremists running
the government.

N ot quite. 45% voted. About 5% (2.25% of the population) of those
voted green. Less than half of the remainder (less than 20% of the
population) voted for Bush (remember, Gore got more votes than Bush).
So the President has a "mandate" of something like 18%.

Damn...Britain is turning into another place I can't
move to after the next election.

I really wouldn't worry about it. Religion is dying here faster than
a thing that's dying very fast. This is just one policeman, who
happens to organise prayers against crime. Even *he* admits that
recent reductions in crime figures are to do with mundane things such
as the efforts of his colleagues, although he says "...the prayers of
local people are definitely there in the mix." Whatever. Funny how
his god doesn't seem to care about the crimes in other areas of the
country.
The report also mentions some research from earlier this year, which
indicated no tangible result from prayer groups. A certain Rt Rev Tom
Wright, was (surprise, surprise) critical of the research, saying that
prayer was "not a penny-in-the-slot machine". Um, what's the point
of it then? If you can't guarantee a result, then I would suggest
it's precisely like a "penny-in-the-slot machine", since it's a
complete gamble whether the god you pray to pays any attention or
not...

An experiment earlier this year into whether prayer does have concrete
results may have disappointed believers.
The study, run by the Duke University Medical Centre in North Carolina
involved prayers being said for half of a group of 750 hospital
patients. Christian, Jewish, Muslim and Buddhist volunteers prayed for
one half of the group, but not for the other. Researchers found no
difference in the recovery rates of the two groups.
Revival movements
Some commentators were, however, dismissive of the study, saying it
was tantamount to "putting God to the test". The Bishop of Durham, the
Rt Rev Tom Wright, was one of the research's critics, saying that
prayer was "not a penny-in-the-slot machine".
</excerpt>
Ironic that xians do use prayer exactly as a slot machine. And of
course "you can't test God" to dismiss results when these indicate a
no god outcome is indistinguishable from a prayer intervention.

It's good to see a Christian admit that their in-dwelling god really
isn't a deterrent to "sinning".

Dear God,
Thank you very much for your help in the last job. I am
sorry I hit the bloke so hard, but he was asking for it. I'll
give some money to the Vicar when I see him.
Could you keep the weather cold and wet tomorrow night? It would
help if the area is deserted when we go over the wall.

From the article:
"The spread of e-mail has however helped make prayer networks easier to set up;
it is possible to join a network praying for practically any part of the
country"
I suppose someone could submit a prayer automatically each day at 8 am by email.
"Dear God, please reduce crime in my neighbourhood today and make all the nasty
criminals go elsewhere."
With the advantages of modern technology the supplicant needn't even get out of
bed in the mornings any more.
