"Tony Blair, who is on holiday in Italy, will face the task of dealing
with the fallout from the French vote when Britain takes over the EU
presidency on July 1. "
Why does a country that refuses to adopt the Euro get to be President of
the EU?

Because it rotates through the member nations, and it was his turn.
He hasn't got any power in that position.

I like this bit:

One interesting aspect of the referendum is the extent to which France's
electoral map resembles that of the U.S.--a sea of red with a few urban
islands of blue

Of course, this ignores the fact that the reason the French rejected
the EU Constitution is that they felt it was too conservative, and
threatened France's social welfare system. Opposition to the
Constitution thus came primarily from the left and also from the far
Right, who feared it undermined French sovereignty. If they came up
with a more "liberal" (in the US sense) constitution, most French would
go for it. You can now go back to your regularly scheduled program of
hating the French.

And one interesting difference is that in *France's* 'red' areas the
population can *read*...

And is it any surprise to anyone that, with the electorate of one of the
EU's central members now having decisively rejected the offered
'Constitution', we hear this evening that the Eurocrats have suddenly
started talking about *how the agreement might not actually 'need' to be
accepted by Europe's populations* before it is ratified!! Seriously: there
are calls to 'go ahead with it all anyway', even though the original deal
was that everyone had to agree to it!
So as in so many other areas, we see here just what the Eurocrat's attitude
to 'democracy' is: we can have all the democracy we desire, as long as it
doesn't interfere with what they want to do...

Oh I know all that. I personally don't care which groups and why they got
to the right (as in correct) answer. Your remarks do bring to mind an
amusing observation I read at the MRC, however. In the US media it has
become common practice in the MSM to label sources as being Conservative or
"Far Right" much more commonly than it is to apply any labels to Liberals or
"Far Left."
