Lesbian Beats Little Boy To Death
Slain because he refused to call his mother's lesbian lover `Daddy'
Four-year-old Jandre Botha disobeyed an order to call his mother's lesbian
lover "Daddy''.
So the lover, Engeline de Nysschen (33), viciously assaulted Jandre while
demanding that he must call her "Daddy".
Jandre died from his injuries, which trauma expert Professor Mohammed Dada
said were similar to those of a person who had fallen from a double-storey
building.
Yesterday Vereeniging Regional Court magistrate Rita Willemse found De
Nysschen and the mother, Hanelie Botha (31) - who did nothing to protect her
child - guilty of murder.
Jandre's father, Jan Botha, sat in court holding the hands of his fiancée,
Yolanda Deysel, and listened attentively to Willemse, who, in her judgment,
accepted evidence that among the reasons that led to Jandre's brutal ordeal
was his refusal to call De Nysschen "Daddy".
The court had heard evidence from Lydia Nkomo and her daughter Aletta
Lesiba, who worked for the couple in their tuckshop, that De Nysschen had
viciously assaulted Jandre while demanding that he must call her "Daddy".
Both testified that while Jandre was assaulted, his mother failed to
intervene or protect him. Evidence showed he had sustained horrific
injuries, including a fractured skull and brain damage, as well as broken
legs, collarbone, hands and pelvis.
Delivering judgment, Willemse acknowledged there was no substantial evidence
linking Hanelie Botha to the assaults, but said she was equally guilty of
murder for failing in her legal duty to protect her child against abuse and
violation.

Provincetown, Mass., and if you could see the police logs, you

Official indicted on menacing allegation
Commissioner accused of chasing Toledo teen
By MARK REITER
BLADE STAFF WRITER
An indictment against Henry County Commissioner Steven A. Baden was filed
yesterday in Lucas County Common Pleas Court for an incident in January
involving a 14-year-old girl.
Mr. Baden, 39, of Hamler, Ohio, was indicted on one count of menacing by
stalking, a fourth-degree felony that carries a maximum possible sentence
of 18 months in prison and a $5,000 fine upon conviction.
He is accused of following a girl who was walking in her South Toledo
neighborhood on the afternoon of Jan. 31.
Authorities said he drove up to her, got out of his vehicle, and
called, "Come here, little girl," before chasing her for a short time on foot.
The grand jury, which was presented with evidence in the case on
Thursday afternoon, also was asked to indict Mr. Baden on a charge of
attempt to commit abduction.
But the panel didn't return an indictment.
Mr. Baden, a Republican, is a former Hamler mayor.
He has been a commissioner since 2003, when he was appointed to
replace Richard Bertz, who resigned because of ill health.
Toledo attorney Richard Hasbrook, who represents Mr. Baden, said his
client will not resign from his elected position.
"He is not going to resign as commissioner. He intends to fulfill the
duties of his office," he said.
Mr. Baden was arrested Feb. 8 and led out of the commissioners' office in
Napoleon in handcuffs.
Toledo police who investigated the girl's accusations charged him with
attempted abduction.
Lori Olender, an assistant county prosecutor, said the charge handed up by
the grand jury was more reflective of the alleged incident
because the victim was not touched or grabbed.
Police said Mr. Baden was in his red Mustang in the area of Baden
Street and Walbridge Avenue and drove around the block four or five times
while the girl and a friend were walking home from school.
The victim went to her home, and later left to walk to a friend's
home.
She said she was walking in the parking lot of the nearby Broadway Food
Center, where Mr. Baden got out of his car, authorities said.

She was just a little girl and he was a big man.
Not just any man. Her father. A Sunday school teacher.
On Sunday night, police say, after offering to put their children to bed
in their Clarendon Hills home, Neil J. Lofquist, 40, strangled and stabbed
his 8-year-old daughter, Lauren, and tried to drown her in the toilet.
Prosecutors say he committed the murder while his wife was downstairs in
their home, in the 100 block of Chicago Avenue. Their 6-year-old son,
Lars, was in his bed nearby.
Perhaps there will be some answers today, when Lofquist appears in DuPage
County Court on first-degree murder charges.

In the meantime, Lofquist's mother is mystified, the police and paramedics
who tried to save the girl are getting counseling, and Clarendon Hills
parents are struggling with what to tell their kids.
"As this progresses, people will be [as] bewildered as we are," said
Police Chief Patrick Anderson.
"It's just unreal," said Lofquist's mother, Dorothy. "It just is a mystery
to me. I talked to him just yesterday, and everything seemed great."
Neil Lofquist is from a family with deep roots in Glen Ellyn. he graduated
from Glenbard West and Iowa State University in Ames and had an MBA from
DePaul University, his mother said.
Lofquist worked in the financial sector, most recently in insurance, his
mother said, while his wife was an occupational therapist.
Up until he sold them two years ago, Lofquist owned two pottery shops: The
Mad Potter in Downers Grove and Oak Park.
"Based upon the facts and circumstances of this tragic situation, I will
request a psychiatric forensic evaluation to determine the defendant's
mental capacity," DuPage County State's Attorney Joe Birkett said in a
statement.
Asked if her son had any mental health problems or financial trouble,
Dorothy Lofquist said: "No. Seemingly no."
Police received a 911 call about 10 p.m. Sunday, said First Assistant
State's Attorney Nancy Wolfe.
"The defendant offered to put the young children to bed. Sometime during
this process, he began to strangle her in her bedroom and attempted to
drown her in the commode and inflicted a knife wound on her neck,"
according to Wolfe.
Prayer service set for today
"Lofquist then allegedly went to a neighbor's house unexpectedly and was
told by the neighbor to go back home," according to a statement from
Wolfe's office. Lofquist, who had a minor hand wound, returned to his home
and told his wife he needed to go to Hinsdale Hospital, Wolfe said.
Then Lofquist directed his wife to ask a next-door neighbor to baby-sit
Lauren while he, his wife and son went to the hospital, officials said.
It was hospital workers who called 911 to ask police to make a well-being
check at the home, officials said. Police arriving at the scene met the
neighbor, who was already giving the girl CPR.
The slaying stunned neighbors. Gert Masulis, a 48-year resident, said the
Lofquists, who moved in about six years ago, seemed like a happy family.
She said the children were riding their bikes around the neighborhood
Sunday. A prayer service is set for 4 p.m. today at the family's church,
Clarendon Hills Community Presbyterian.
The Illinois Department of Children and Family Services has begun a "death
by abuse investigation," said agency spokeswoman Diane Jackson. The agency
had no prior contact with the family.

Death ordered in child's murder

JACKSON, Miss. - A man was sentenced to death on Sunday for the murder of
his then-girlfriend's 5-year-old daughter.
In Hinds County's first death penalty case in six years, Eric Moffett was
found guilty of raping Felicia Griffin and strangling her to death in
1994.
"Losing Felicia is worse than having a heart attack," said Felicia's
mother, Pennie Griffin, as she cried hysterically on the stand during the
penalty phase.
"I didn't carry her in my womb for that length of time for nothing," she
said. "I have missed 11 birthdays, 11 Christmases and 11 Mother's Days."
Hinds County Circuit Judge Swan Yerger set an April 26 execution date for
Moffett, 31, who will die by lethal injection.
Moffett has the right to appeal the ruling.
He will be transferred from the Hinds County Detention Center to death row
at Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman.
After the sentencing, Hinds County Assistant District Attorney Rebecca
Mansell told the jury that they had decided a case that may never have a
match in Hinds County again.
She assured the jury during closing arguments that there was no doubt that
Moffett was the perpetrator
"I have not seen an injury like this done to a child in my 12 years as a
prosecutor," said Mansell, referring to how Moffett was accused of putting
his fist in the child's vagina and tearing it from the front to the back.
"Felicia is trying very hard to let you see the evidence," she said.
Dan Duggan, one of Moffett's attorneys, told the jury that a detective had
lied and fabricated evidence against his client.
Moffett had claimed that Felicia was killed by an intruder. He told
authorities that he returned home from a bar and found the child bleeding
in the master bedroom.
Jurors deliberated for four hours before convicting Moffett.
None of Moffett's relatives testified to plead for his life, though six
members of his family were in court.
LaQuandia, Griffin's oldest daughter, had testified earlier in the week
that she remembered Moffett carrying Felicia into the bedroom on the night
she was killed.
Moffett had previously been charged in the case, but was released.
Authorities reopened the case in 2002 after DNA and other new evidence
came into play.

Lesbian Beats Little Boy To Death
Slain because he refused to call his mother's lesbian lover `Daddy'
Four-year-old Jandre Botha disobeyed an order to call his mother's lesbian
lover "Daddy''.
So the lover, Engeline de Nysschen (33), viciously assaulted Jandre while
demanding that he must call her "Daddy".
Jandre died from his injuries, which trauma expert Professor Mohammed Dada
said were similar to those of a person who had fallen from a double-storey
building.
Yesterday Vereeniging Regional Court magistrate Rita Willemse found De
Nysschen and the mother, Hanelie Botha (31) - who did nothing to protect her
child - guilty of murder.
Jandre's father, Jan Botha, sat in court holding the hands of his fiancée,
Yolanda Deysel, and listened attentively to Willemse, who, in her judgment,
accepted evidence that among the reasons that led to Jandre's brutal ordeal
was his refusal to call De Nysschen "Daddy".
The court had heard evidence from Lydia Nkomo and her daughter Aletta
Lesiba, who worked for the couple in their tuckshop, that De Nysschen had
viciously assaulted Jandre while demanding that he must call her "Daddy".
Both testified that while Jandre was assaulted, his mother failed to
intervene or protect him. Evidence showed he had sustained horrific
injuries, including a fractured skull and brain damage, as well as broken
legs, collarbone, hands and pelvis.
Delivering judgment, Willemse acknowledged there was no substantial evidence
linking Hanelie Botha to the assaults, but said she was equally guilty of
murder for failing in her legal duty to protect her child against abuse and
violation.
