Let's face it, the GOP has lost its soul
Alamogordo Daily News
By Jeff Stevens, Assistant Editor
Article Launched: 12/31/2006 12:00:00 AM MST
I stated a few weeks back that I'm the last pure Republican. I'm sure
you've all wondered what that means.
I'm gonna tell you.
Fourteen years ago, when I first went to the registrar's office, I
checked Republican as my party affiliation. It seemed a safe enough
choice. The Republican Party, after all, only came into being as a
means to abolish slavery. That alone should have been sufficient to
prove Republicans are the good guys.
And then there's rough ridin' Teddy Roosevelt. Perhaps no other man in
history did more to protect Americans from the abuses of big business.
He established guidelines that protected workers and more guidelines
to protect our food supply.
He was even a conservationist and took measures to protect our
environment. He did much more, and with it proved his party was a
party of the people. Of course, Republicans of today oppose everything
for which he stood.
Still, Republicans today have a good sales pitch. They're for lower
taxes. I hate paying taxes. When I was young and first married, my
wife and I would go to the store and spend hours figuring the best
values. We clipped coupons and took advantage of every sale. Not once
did we accept food stamps or assistance.
That very frugality,

however, was thrown in our face as we stood in line behind a family
who did take advantage of those programs. That family bought two full
grocery carts of junk, mostly expensive junk, with nothing more than
vouchers and slips of paper provided by the government. We paid for
our meager groceries and went out to our crappy car to see those folks
on food stamps loading their taxpayer-funded bounty into a new
Cadillac. So yeah, I hated taxes. And if the Republicans could make my
taxes lower by not feeding people like that, I said great.
Republicans are for less government. That sounds good. Less government
means fewer people on the payroll. It means fewer laws. It means less
interference in my life by the government.
Republicans are God-fearing folks. There's nothing wrong with
morality. Truth be told, the country could use a little more morality,
less crime and people just being nice to each other. It would be a
fantastic and expected change if we all were a bit more moral.
But guess what? Republicans, in practice, adopt a more "Do as I say,
not as I do" program.
Lower taxes? George W. Bush's administration has achieved the
distinction of creating the largest federal spending bill in history.
And before him, that honor belonged to his father. And before him,
that honor belonged to Ronald Reagan. In fact, Democrats under
Clinton, and before him, Carter, both decreased federal spending.
Well, surely Republicans have made federal government smaller.
Nope. Wrong again. Bush has created the largest federal bureaucracy in
history. As if that wasn't enough, he's trying to make it illegal to
disagree with him. He's thrown the Constitution out the window and
given himself the right to eavesdrop on anyone he wants. Seems the
government used to need a warrant for such things. He's even tried to
change the Constitution so he could pass more laws to legislate
morality 9 his brand of morality.
Less government is less government. That means Republicans should be
for doing away with frivolous laws that only exist because they don't
like someone else's lifestyles 9 laws such as those against marijuana.
Given their platform, Republicans should be for legalizing marijuana
and a whole cadre of other drugs as long as people choose to get high
at home. Republicans won't do that, though, because they're only for
less government as it applies to who does and doesn't make the largest
campaign contributions.
Republicans shouldn't be for making laws to keep homosexuals from
getting married. Why do they care? If they had any sense they'd be for
it.
Married homosexuals would settle down, raise families, contribute more
to the gross national product, contribute more taxes and further halt
the spread of STDs, all of which would decrease federal spending in
those areas.
But marriage is sacred, so saith our Christian, Republican brethren.
Horse crap!
Christians lost that argument when the divorce rate in this country
skyrocketed. I always find it funny preachers will talk about the
sanctity of marriage and what the Bible says about homosexuality, but
never utter a whisper about what the Bible says on divorce.
For the record, the Bible says God hates divorce, and if you get one
for any other reason than infidelity, you're committing adultery even
if you remarry someone else. You won't hear that in church because
it'd empty the building and deprive them of all those juicy,
sanctimonious dollars. By the way, the Bible has a ton more to say
about divorce and its avoidance than it ever did about homosexuals.
Well, at least Republicans have the Christian thing going for 'em.
Can't hurt to have God on your side, when your defending mankind from
the evil, drug-smoking, homosexual Muslims.
Oh, wait a minute. After closer inspection of what God has to say
about the matter, there seems to be a disconnect. The Bible says
something about "thou shalt not kill."
Well, I'm guessing here that includes bringing the full force of the
United States military to bear against someone for the specific goal
of killing. And what about all the Americans who have been killed in
this pointless pursuit. Have not Bush and his emissaries caused the
death of those boys in Iraq, and endangered their very souls for those
deaths as well?
The Bible also says "Love thy neighbor as you love thyself." I'm
sorry, boys, but I'm having a hard time seeing where the Republicans
have been spreading much love around the globe.
But it's obvious Republicans 9 or most Christians, for that matter 9
have never read a Bible. Jesus advocated love, peace and kindness. He
witnessed to the infidels. He didn't kill them. He took his message to
hookers and sinners. He didn't tell them to stay away.
And 9 for Congress and the Catholic church 9 he loved children. He
didn't bugger them. So for all you Christians who also claim to be
Republicans, you're either deluded or intentionally full of crap.
Maybe you're both.
So. in a nutshell, I'm a Republican. I believe in smaller government,
less taxes and the Constitution. I believe the government is here to
protect us from individuals and organizations who would do us harm, be
they rapists, murderers, terrorists or greedy profit-obsessed CEOs.
I believe we were justified to retaliate in Afghanistan, and I believe
we've been lied to about Iraq. There were no weapons of mass
destruction. And even if there were, and if we assume insane dictators
with their thumb on the trigger of a nuke is justification for
invading a foreign country, why then have we not bombed North Korea?
As for the diatribe on religion, if you want to get divorced, get
divorced. If you want to believe in God, then do so. Just don't pick
the parts you like and ignore the rest while forcing it down someone
else's throat 9 or to paraphrase the Bible, "Don't pick the splinter
from your brother's eye while you ignore the 2-by-4 in your own."
