Object: Letter to the Editor: Love God or leave America, professors
I can't decide if this letter writer is serious, or just doing a
parody.
From the article:
--------------------------------------------------------------
The York College professors who are so self-righteously protesting the
teaching of a touch of creation history in the name of "intelligent
design" in the Dover school system need to pause and thank the God of
the Holy Bible and Jesus Christ for the freedom to speak out against
the hand that is feeding them — America.
Also pause to thank our founding fathers, who, being inspired by
"intelligent design," fought all the battles that generated our
Constitution and therefore freedom of speech. Now let's compare. Every
country on this earth that taught Darwin or otherwise ignored the God
of the Holy Bible are all dictatorships or some other form of
socialism such as bestowed by Hitler, Lenin, Stalin etc. — wherein "we
the people" are enslaved and the penalty for speaking out gets a
bullet in the nape of the neck. Is that the "free choice" the York
College faculty want for America, too?
Thank goodness the "professors" shot themselves in the foot in their
first paragraph when they use the term "evolutionary theory." They are
right. Evolution is theory while Christianity is truth and fact. There
is nothing "supernatural" about creation science or America's "God
Bless America." And yes, by all means teach intelligent design as a
major part of the history of the great United States of America. To
those who don't like it, shut up or find another country that better
suits your atheistic proclivities.

Wee, nice to know us Kiwis are in a dictatorship. According to the latest
Nat Geog, we're actually the oldest real democracy (that is, where everyone
has the vote). Actually I thought our labour government was just following
the Germans. Nothing to do with the Holy Babble there.
But don't let a little bit of factual stuff get in the way of ignorance.

Actually, if you define most democratic on the proportion that has the vote,
then NZ was the first complete democracy. Women got the vote here in 1893,
England, not until 1921(?).

And Wyoming Territory was not the entire US.

Nevertheless, a bunch of ignorant 'mericans gave women the right to vote a
full 24 years before NZ did. Incidentally, Wyoming was admitted to the union
in 1890. I believe that Switzerland did not grant women's sufferage until
about 1971 or so. Needless to say (though I will anyway), there are numerous
places around the world that still don't. But, IIANM, Wyoming was the first
place anywhere to do so.
I'm curious, were the Maori granted the RTV in 1893?

England, not until 1921(?).

In the U.S., Wyoming territory granted women's sufferage in 1869.

Sure, I knew that. But native Americans and Blacks didn't have the

vote.

And Wyoming Territory was not the entire US.

Nevertheless, a bunch of ignorant 'mericans gave women the right to vote a
full 24 years before NZ did. Incidentally, Wyoming was admitted to the

union

in 1890.

Yep, knew that too. But the Union did not allow women the vote at that time.
BTW - I didn't *say* you were ignorant 'mericans.

I believe that Switzerland did not grant women's sufferage until
about 1971 or so. Needless to say (though I will anyway), there are

numerous

places around the world that still don't. But, IIANM, Wyoming was the

first

place anywhere to do so.

I'm curious, were the Maori granted the RTV in 1893?

Nope, 1865. If they were also landholders. Then every male circa 1878.
Actually, based purely on the landholding right to vote, more Maori could
vote, earlier, than most Pakeha (whites). Which actually helps to explain
the granting of universal male suffrage.

It may have something to do with the fact that, until about 1870, there were
more Maori in NZ than Pakeha. And they were pretty well armed. Also Maori
did have some idea of land ownership. At least enough to get titles issued
for Maori corporations, and also various individuals. In addition (white)
Aussies have always seen aboriginals as somewhat less than civilised
(Looking over shoulder just in case Wilkins is charging up the
backstraight).
BTW don't see the fact that Maori had the right to vote as a unmitigated
good thing. They could only vote for 4 (yep 4) members of parliament. And
those 4 had to be Maori.

Hmm, now the independence of NZ is a slippery little sod. In some respects
NZ was independent from 1854, when the NZ parliament was set up. From that
date we could make our own laws, and we had to pay the Brits for the use of
their military. Strictly speaking we weren't entirely independent then
because we were subservient to Britain in respect of foreign policy and
trade treaties. But internal affairs were entirely ours from that date.
The Dominion Act of 1907 severed those connections. Although, I guess, you
could say we're still not independent as our head of state is the British
Queen and the government is, legally, called "the crown".

Hey, look, they're Icelanders you know. What do they count? Actually the
Althing was disbanded after Iceland became part of Denmark. The Althing was
not a parliament as we would understand it. People voted by grouping around
the person they agreed with. And sometimes such differences would be
settled by trial by combat. The Althing was actually several such meetings,
that each sent representatives to a "chief" Althing. If you want to know
more read Gwyn Jones _A History of the Vikings_. In practice the Althing(s)
tended to be dominated by the nobility, at least after Christianity came in,
and the commoners had their weapons taken off them.

The ignorance of some people is truly staggering. First of
all, the Nazis *were* Christian. While they did base some
of their policies on perversions of Darwin, they also used
the Bible, Theosophy, Nordic mythology, the occult, and
everything else they could get their hands on.
The Soviets *were* officially atheists, but THEY ALSO REJECTED
DARWIN, for exactly the same reasons the Discovery Institute
wants you to reject him. They replaced natural selection with
"Lysenkoism" - basically a 3 billion year class struggle. In
other words, it was an atheist's "Intelligent Design".

That's subject to question?

That you are able to question our government without fear of being
locked up or killed tells me that the USA is still a good distance from
the shores of tyranny.
Sorry. Bush may be a misguided twit, he may surround himself with some
truly evil people bent on US global supremacy, but he is no dictator.

Some have been, so the distance is getting smaller.

Not for lack of trying. But he has 4 more years in which to keep
trying.

Always the problem, in life as on TO.

I wish it was parody. Sadly, tis the usual Christian fundy idiocy.
