he would back whichever candidate appealed to him regardless
of party. That means that he could still back a Democrat. Don't
cheer until you have something to cheer about. It makes you

Also, appearances notwithstanding, Lieberman isn't an idiot. If he
jumps ship to the Republican side of the isle, he's burned all
Democratic bridges forever. When the Republicans dump him because
he's not one of them (1. Not a Republican, 2. Not a Christian), he can
count down his final days to oblivion with absolutely zero power to
wield. The longer he stays on the Dem side of the isle, he can still
keep this option as an ace in the hole, but he can only use it once.

Actually, it would change the Senate leadership. Right now, the Senate
is divided 51 Democrats and 49 Republicans. If Lieberman decided to
caucus with the Republicans, the Senate would be 50:50. Then, the
tiebreaking vote would be by the vice-president, who is also President
of the Senate. I would be willing to bet that he isn't going to vote
with the Democrats.

Yes, the composition of the Senate would then be even, and if there
was a reorganizational vote then, presumably, each caucus would get 50
votes, with the Vice President breaking that tie. But why would there
be a reorganizational vote?
Don't look for Harry Reid to offer one up, and without his support
there can't be one. The organizing resolution passed this year,
unlike the one passed in January of 2001, doesn't compel a
reorganizational vote if the composition of the Senate changes.
Unlike in 2001, the Democrats aren't going to willingly cede control
of the Senate to the Republicans.
