On January 30, Iraq is slated to hold its first national election.

of deadly insurgent attacks, some fear that the situation could
degenerate into chaos, and that the establishment of Iraq as an outpost
of democracy in the Middle East is a mere pipe dream. But others argue
that even going through the motions of a democratic election could
inspire Iraqis to think about themselves and their system of government
differently-and perhaps could ultimately make way for democracy not
only in Iraq, but throughout the region.
