Object: Living By The Bible
1) I want to sell my daughter into into slavery, as SANCTIONED in
Exodus.21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a
fair price
for her?
2) Lev.25:44 states that I may indeed possess slaves, both male
and FEMALE,
provided that they were bought from neighboring nations. Ive
heard this
applies to Mexicans but not Canadians. Could you clarify??
3) I know the bible says I am not allowed contact with women
while they are
in their period of menstual uncleanliness as stated in LEV.15:19-
24. Problem
is, how do I tell? Ive tried asking, but most women take
offense. If I come
into contact with a woman who is menstruating and she doesnt
tell me until
afterwards, must I kill her immediately or can I just beat her?
Lets all live like the bible says we should! <g>

$100,000 or the equivalent couple years of average wages if the pre US
civil war market values are applied.

Mexicans are the equivalent of Canaanites <disclaimer inserted here>
you see but the Canadians are the equivalent of the other half of
Judea/Israel when the 12 tribes split into 2 nations.

The bible allows the use of a stick that is no thicker than your thumb
against a woman. Any thicker than this would simply be an abuse of
power. Remember the woman is your property.

Lets all live like the bible says we should! <g>

This option is available today in those parts of Afghanistan still
under the control of the Taliban and in Iran although they probably do
not have as pure a form of Abrahamic law as the former.

In some cases, fathers could sell their daughters as a maidservant and
wife. Since they were then married to their master, they were not
automatically set free after six years (though unmarried female slaves
were freed, as Dt 15:12 explicitly states). However, they were still
protected by the law:
* If the husband divorced his wife, the law labelled it "unfair
treatment" and allowed for her to be freed (Ex 21:8)
* If someone bought a wife for his son, he was to treat her as his
daughter (Ex 21:9)
* Neglected wives were automatically freed (Ex 21:10-11)
Captives of war apparently became slaves, and men could choose to marry
female captives. There were similar laws for the protection of these
women, even though they would have been in the lowest class of society:
* Captive women were given a month to mourn their families and
adjust to their new home before marrying (Dt 21:13)
* If divorced by their husband, they were freed (Dt 21:14)
* They could not be sold to anyone else (Dt 21:14)

While foreign slaves could be made slaves for life, the laws regarding
the general treatment of slaves applied to them as well (Lev 24:22, Num
15:15-16). The law made it clear that foreigners were not inferiors who
could be mistreated (Ex 23:9); instead they were to be loved just as
fellow Israelites were (Lev 19:33-34). For more information, see the
article on Gentiles in the OT.

# Just think - sell your own daughter as though she were a sheep or goat.
No mention of selling sons I see.

Captives of war apparently became slaves, and men could choose to marry

women, even though they would have been in the lowest class of society:

# I bet that protection didn't include her intake on who she'd like to
marry.

* Captive women were given a month to mourn their families and
adjust to their new home before marrying (Dt 21:13)
* If divorced by their husband, they were freed (Dt 21:14)
* They could not be sold to anyone else (Dt 21:14)

# How did they support themselves once freed and who got to keep the
children of these forced unions? I remember reading the man got to keep the
children and she walked away with NOTHING but the clothes on her back.
Women who resisted being sexually attacked by their unwanted husbands/owners
could be severely beaten into submission and raped. When sex is not mutual
it's RAPE.

# And human nature being what it is do you actually think they were treated
with love and respect? There are examples in the bible of concubines being
handed over to men to be raped and sexually abused. When one died after
being raped all night, her owner cut her in pieces. You see nothing wrong
with this?

# No they haven't.... the fundies try and whitewash slavery and the
abysmal treatment of women in biblical times.

Except, of course, for the little problem of slavery itself.
And, would you stone your children to death if they
converted to another religion? Just wondering.
