Imitation (and 'plagiarism') is the sincerest form of flattery. I posed just
the same form of 'question' -- but in reverse -- to the theist long ago, and
in several different forms. I had *no* 'takers' -- including *you*. I said
straight out that given sufficient 'proof' that a 'God' exists that I would
readily admit I was wrong and act correspondingly. It would be the logical,
rational thing to do, would it not? (And that would include even being
deftly *fooled* by 'bogus evidence'!)
How about *you*? What would it take *you*, personally, to admit that a 'God'
exists nowhere outside the imagination? Hmmm? And, please: Don't 'disappear'
on us and avoid answering the question -- *honestly*.

Ok to be fair, if I did not truly understand God, I would say yes, the
possibility exists.
But you do not understand the way I do. I cannot rip this feeling and
awareness out of my soul.
Unfortunately there are so many Gods. It is easy for most to become
confused, following after one or the other until they become fed up and quit
all of them (which, now that I think of it, is a blessing in disguise.
Better to follow no God than the wrong ones).
As for me I can not throw away my perception or understanding. I know who I
am and what I am and where Heaven lies.
But I hope that does not effect our friendship, however weakly perceived it
is.
I'll hang out and be just a regular guy.

I wasn't mislead into my lack of faith, I simply gave up believing
because of all the lies and contradictions I was told in church and by
other believers.
It doesn't bother me that many people are superstitious. I just wish
they'd stop trying to force their bizarre beliefs upon innocent
people.
Now, if you'll excuse me, a dog just licked my hand, so I have to wash
my hands 7 times. Then I have to kill the dog. Then wash my hands 7
times more.
Then I'll spin around in a circle 3 times.
Then I'll pray to an elephant-headed god.
Then I'll consult my horoscope to make sure the planets are in a
fortunate alignment to achieve these objectives.
WAIT! WAIT!

Which god?
I think he should prove that Minerva exists.

Sure, I might be wrong. Jesus might be a (sick) god, but so might Thor,
Zeus, or some as-yet-unnamed god. The important question is "Have you
any reason to believe that faith is more than wishful thinking, that any
god exists outside the liturature and imaginations of men?"
If your answer is "No", then what's your point?

Sorry I have not been misled.
The words that triggered of my atheism were:
"This discussion cannot be settled by a bible quote"
(translated from Dutch)
They were the words of the Editor of a Roman Catholic Weekly, in
response to me suggesting to prnit chapter 5 of Matthew in a
discussion about nuclear weapons.
Do you think the man said these words hoping I would become an
Atheist.
I think not.
I do admit that before that I mislead myself into believing in a big
daggy in the sky who would make good triumph over evil.

When it comes to faith...faith must always be based on the fact of a
'first see-er' or 'first contact' that is telling the truth. We do not
come up with ideas to base faith on all on our own. All religious
faith is based on someone else's reports. If this persons report is
based on lies, than the faith must evaporate. I am not shy to benefit
from spiritual and religious tools. The only requirement is that the
tool can be tested for practical application. And if the tool can't be
tested and requires faith, I have to let it go for the most part since
there are so many lies that religion of man is based on and no one can
prove or disprove any of it.
That is the beauty of being a freethinker. We can think for ourselves.
As such, when we get a toolbox we can decide which tools to use for
the job. Some tools are used a lot, other tools are left alone for the
time being, and still others are trashed when we see they are broken
and useless. Traditional freethinkers do not accept me as one of their
group, since I draw from spiritual paths as well as wordily areas to
garner wisdom to live at peace. Traditional freethinkers do not like
anything that comes from religion. Kind of a misnomer isn't it...I'm a
freethinker...but I must block out everything that comes from religion
and spiritual traditions and whatever other prejudice I wish to inject
into the equation?
Psychologist William James once said, "A great many people believe
they are thinking when they are merely rearranging their prejudices."
Religious practicers as well as atheist need to open their mind and
see things without the delusions that both sides of this topic are
stuck in. When we limit prejudice we can open our minds to truth and
peace. And realize the truth of Blake's words that "all deities reside
within the human breast." If it is religion that an atheists need to
adopt, they only have to look as far as the religion of humanity. But
just paying secular humanism lip service will not do any good. Our
talk of spiritual values must match our actions.

Sure I could be wrong, but the total lack of objective evidence for
anything supernatural keeps getting in my way of believing in
transcendent gods and ghosts and fairies and things that go bump in
the night. I mean if there any evidence to suggest that such things
had any veracity independent of the imaginations of those who believe
in them, trust me, I know that I would investigate it along with most
of the other atheists here on a.a.
So do you have any evidence?
