Object: Looking for Woody Allen INTERVIEW quotes on atheism
Hey folks,
First time poster here. I'm trying to assemble a bunch of quotes from
Woody Allen on atheism. Thanks to the web, I already have all I need
from his books, stand-up, and movie sources. However, I'd like to find
some quotes from interviews he's given about atheism, or his absence of
belief. If anyone has some of those that they could post, I'd be
grateful...
thanks!

Here's a good one:
To you I'm an atheist; to God, I'm the Loyal Opposition.

Yup, it's a good one. But it's from one of his movies (Stardust
Memories). Here's a list I have so far. I may as well post it here so
that it will forever be enshrined in the Google archives. My focus
now, though, is on filling in the "3rd section" of this piece. Hope
you all enjoy some of the other comments...
Quotes from characters in his Movies:
If it turns out that there IS a God, I don't think that he's evil. I
think that the worst you can say about him is that basically he's an
underachiever.
----------------
You think I was made in God's image? Take a look at me. You think He
wears glasses?
----------
To you, I'm an atheist; to God, I'm the loyal opposition.
----------
The worst are the fundamentalist preachers. Third grade con men telling
the poor suckers that watch them that they speak with Jesus, and to
please send in money. Money, money, money! If Jesus came back and saw
what's going on in his name, he'd never stop throwing up.
----------
We're all faced throughout our lives with agonizing decisions, moral
choices. Some are on a grand scale, most of these choices are on lesser
points. But we define ourselves by the choices we have made. We are, in
fact, the sum total of our choices. Events unfold so unpredictably, so
unfairly, Human happiness does not seem to be included in the design of
creation. It is only we, with our capacity to love, that give meaning
to the indifferent universe. And yet, most human beings seem to have
the ability to keep trying and even try to find joy from simple things,
like their family, their work, and from the hope that future
generations might understand more.
----------
I never believed in God. No, I didn't even as a little kid. I remember
this. I used to think even if he exists, he's done such a terrible job,
it's a wonder people don't get together and file a class action suit
against him.
----------
Between air conditioning and the Pope, I chose air conditioning.
----------
Joan: You're an atheist, Harry.
Harry: Yeah, hey, we're alone in the universe, you're gonna blame that
on me, too?
---------
And you got this shrink who, like God, never speaks, and like God, is
dead.
----------
David: and the next thing I knew they made some crack about my
religion which I found in poor taste.
Jerry: Religion? You're an atheist!
David: Yes, I'm an atheist, but I resented the fact however obliquely
that they implied that Auschwitz was basically just a theme park.
---------
Peter: You feel so sure of that when you look out on a clear night like
tonight and see all those millions of stars? That none of it matters?
Lloyd: I think it's just as beautiful as you do, and vaguely
evocative of some deep truth that always just keeps slipping away, but
then my professional perspective overcomes me, a less wishful, more
penetrating view of it, and I understand it for what it truly is:
haphazard, morally neutral and unimaginably violent.
--------
Quotes from Books/Stand-up routines:
"If only God would give me some clear sign! Like making a large deposit
in my name at a Swiss bank."
--------
"Not only is there no God, but try getting a plumber on weekends."
--------
"As the poet said, 'Only God can make a tree' -- probably because it's
so hard to figure out how to get the bark on."
---------
"How can I believe in God when just last week I got my tongue caught in
the roller of an electric typewriter?"
---------
"I am not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it
happens."
---------
"I asked the girl if she could bring a sister for me. She did. Sister
Maria Teresa. It was a very slow evening. We discussed the New
Testament. We agreed that He was very well adjusted for an only child."
-----------
"I don't believe in an afterlife, although I am bringing a change of
underwear."
----------
"I don't want to achieve immortality through my work; I want to achieve
immortality through not dying."
---------
"I was thrown out of college for cheating on the metaphysics exam; I
looked into the soul of the boy sitting next to me."
---------
"I'm astounded by people who want to 'know' the universe when it's hard
enough to find your way around Chinatown."
---------
The chief problem about death, incidentally, is the fear that there may
be no afterlife -- a depressing thought, particularly for those who
have bothered to shave. Also, there is the fear that there is an
afterlife but no one will know where it's being held.
---------
If God exists, I hope he has a good excuse.
---------
God is either cruel or incompetent.
---------
"Years ago, my mother gave me a bullet and I put it in my breast
pocket. Two years after that, I was walking down the street, when a
berserk evangelist heaved a Gideon bible out a hotel room window,
hitting me in the chest. That Bible would have gone through my heart if
it wasn't for the bullet."
---------
"In the beginning, there was nothing. And God said, "Let there be
light." And there was light. There was still nothing, but you could
see it a lot better."
------
"You can't disprove the existence of God- you just have to take it on
faith"
-------
"God is silent. Now, if we can only get Man to shut up".
---------
Interview quotes:
I am a Jew only in the sense that I was born into a Jewish family. I
have no interest in the organized religions beyond a certain cerebral
historical curiosity. They are all nonsense to me in their basic
premises. . . . I'm agnostic, but I have one foot in atheism
--------
there's no God, and that we're alone in the universe, and that
there is nobody out there to punish you
-------
And the notion of posterity, of achieving immortality through posterity
is the artist's Catholicism; it's the artist's sense of an
afterlife, which I don't believe in at all, and I . . . Catholics do
believe in an afterlife. I don't. And artists do believe in an
afterlife, which I believe is equally as fallacious.

This quote isn't particularly atheist but I've always liked it:
I'm not afraid of death, I just don't want to be there when it happens.

Isn't there another one that goes:
"Not only is there no God, but try getting a plumber at weekends...".
