Object: Lott to resign by end of year
I guess he isn't making enough money as a Senator 'serving' the people.
Sources: Lott to resign by end of year
WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Sen. Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, intends to resign by the
end of the year and join the private sector, sources tell CNN.
Trent Lott, R-Mississippi, is serving in his fourth term in the U.S. Senate.
Lott is expected to make the announcement Monday in Pascagoula, Mississippi.
A senior Republican source close to Lott said one reason for the decision is
the new lobbying restrictions on former lawmakers.
A law kicks in on January 1 that forbids lawmakers from lobbying for two
years after leaving office. Those who leave by the end of 2007 are covered
by the previous law, which demands a wait of only one year.
Lott, the Republican whip, was elected last year to a fourth term in the
Senate. His term lasts until 2012. Watch why Lott is stepping down
Mississippi Gov. Haley Barbour is responsible for appointing someone to hold
Lott's seat until a special election next year.
Rep. Chip Pickering, who has previously announced his resignation from the
House, and Rep. Roger Wicker are both considered possible contenders for the
seat.
Five other GOP senators -- John Warner of Virginia, Wayne Allard of
Colorado, Pete Domenici of New Mexico, Chuck Hagel of Nebraska, and Larry
Craig of Idaho have said they will not seek re-election next year.
Lott's resignation will bring to an end his more than three decades in
Congress. He won a House seat in 1972 and was first elected to the Senate in
1988.
He is the first person to serve as whip in both the House and Senate.
Lott, 66, served as Senate majority leader when Republicans controlled that
body but was pushed out of the leadership post after he told a 2002 birthday
gathering for former Sen. Strom Thurmond that the country would have avoided
"all these problems" if Thurmond's 1948 segregationist presidential bid had
succeeded. Lott later apologized for his "poor choice of words."
Lott feels he has vindicated himself and has helped guide his state through
the difficulties of Hurricane Katrina's destruction, the senior Republican
source said.

It's obvious that he's leaving the Senate to

That's the reason for the "by the end of the year" bit. New law taking
effect 1/08 would require he wait two years before becoming a lobbyist.
So he has to quit before then...

Yes. That was the reason given by the pundits today. However, as usual,

And there's the rub. Nonetheless, the safe money is that he will get a

Geoff, all the people who elected the turkey just one year ago
will know for certain that they are less important to Lott than
making money is to him. He's just another greedy gut Republican.
This kind of behavior could turn some people against the
Republicans. We'll see who they elect next time around. Lott
did a selfish thing that could reflect on his Party along with
all the other selfish things the Rethugs have been doing.
And, he isn't the only Republican who is heading for the hills.

A new Repubican will be nominated for 4 more years.

If he waits until his term is over, he has to wait for 2 years to
lobby. Currently the wait is 1 year.

And there's the rub. Nonetheless, the safe money is that he will get a
high-paying job on K St. despite not being directly involved in legalized
bribery.

Geoff, all the people who elected the turkey just one year ago
will know for certain that they are less important to Lott than
making money is to him.

He's been there for many years. And a new Republican will be appointed to
replace him.

He's just another greedy gut Republican.
This kind of behavior could turn some people against the
Republicans.

But the alternative is the ..................... 'rats.

No. The governor appoints a replacement, likely a Republican. A special
election open to all parties will be held next year. It will likely be a
Republican who wins the seat.

Yep. If his current term runs out in 2008.

Actually, by state law, the election has to be with-in 90 days. The
law changes next year, but so does the lobbying law. So if Lott does
leave this year then the appointed senator only has 90 days to impress
people before the election. The Dems think they have a reasonable, if
outside, chance at the seat. Of course Lott can stay until next year,
giving the guy more time. But then he does not get to lobby for two
years.
