West Virginia's five congressional representatives all say
they've never requested former Pfc. Jessica Lynch be given
the Medal of Honor, despite reports to the contrary from a
high military official.
Retired Marine Lieutenant General Michael DeLong wrote
recently in a New York Times op-ed piece that West Virginia
politicians repeatedly pressured the military to grant Lynch,
a prisoner of war, the nation's highest military honor.
In an interview with the Daily Mail this week, DeLong would
not disclose who specifically called for Lynch to receive the
prestigious award.
DeLong stated only:
It was *at least one senator and one congressman from
West Virginia*
"They know who they are," said DeLong, who was deputy
commander at United States Central Command from 2001 to 2003.
*It's not a total secret* "Congressional liaisons talked to us
multiple times"

There have been two Medals of Honor awarded so far
in the Iraq War - both posthumously: one
to Corporal Jason Dunham for throwing himself on
a grenade to save his fellow soldiers, and one to
Sergeant Paul Smith for singlehandedly holding
off an entire company (killing 50) while his companions
got to safety.

I can't believe anyone even considered
such a medal for Jessica Lynch, and if they
pushed it through, I can't believe she would
have accepted it.

Frankly, this sounds like an urban myth that was probably propagated
by intense media hype surrounding her ordeal. IOW, some moron in the
press probably mentioned it and the story took off from there....
Just guessing though...

AS the deputy commander at United States Central Command from 2001 to 2003, I
represented the military in dealing with politicians regarding the capture and
rescue of Pfc. Jessica D. Lynch in Iraq, and thus I can speak with authority about
what really happened after her maintenance convoy got lost near Nasiriya in 2003
and she was taken prisoner. I feel compelled to respond to accusations that have
been made in recent days by several politicians.

The initial reports from the field regarding Private Lynch stated that she had gone
down fighting, had emptied her weapon and that her actions were heroic. Based on
these
reports, politicians from her home state, West Virginia, wanted the military to
award
her the Medal of Honor. Their request rose up the ladder until finally it reached
me.
But initial combat reports are often wrong. Time must always be taken to thoroughly
investigate all claims.

It may or may not be true, but it will have to stay in the
"urban legend" file until either someone comes forward
or he can be a bit more specific about who the "politicians"
were.
"worked its way up the ladder until it came to me" could
well be a euphemism for "I heard from a guy who
heard from a guy".
There's no question that the public was nutty enough
to support this crazy idea, it's just a question of
whether politicians were silly enough to go
along.

Regards,

I suspect you're correct. DeLong attributes the idea
to "politicians from her native state", although so far
they've all denied it and he won't name names. I would
guess if pressed, he would probably admit that he
*heard* some politicians from W.Va were pressing
for the Medal of Honor.
In the Jessica Lynch Circus, the military has gotten a
lot of the blame that rightfully goes to politicians and
the media, so maybe DeLong is just grumpy. He's
also hawking a book.
As a fun exercise in how fast things spread on the
web, google the exact phrase (ie in quotes)
"The politicians repeatedly said that a medal would be good for women"
I just got 73 exact matches, and I suspect the number will
grow rapidly. A few are multiply counted in blog responses,
but there are plenty of separate web sites in the list.
