Madonna Could be Sent into Space in 2009 - Russian Space Agency
RIA Novosti (Russia) ^ | 13/ 09/ 2006
Posted on 09/13/2006 10:02:30 PM PDT by anymouse
The Russian Space Agency has no objections to Madonna's plans for a
space flight, but the American pop diva could make a space trip no
earlier than 2009, the agency's spokesperson said Wednesday.
Alexei Mitrofanov, a flamboyant lawmaker from the ultra-nationalist
LDPR party, earlier proposed that Madonna's desire to make the trip,
which she expressed during her two-day visit to Russia, be fulfilled -
a proposal that met with rejection by Russian lawmakers.
"We are aware of today's debates in the State Duma [the lower house of
the Russian parliament] as to the proposed flight by Madonna to the
International Space Station," Igor Panin said.
"Although a precise schedule for the flights of the so-called 'space
tourists' has been approved until the end of 2008, Madonna's request
will not meet any objections, and her representatives can approach us
even now," he said, adding that the pop star's physical fitness and
finances guarantee that her space dreams might come true as early as
2009.
Madonna's world tour, which continues next week in Japan, has drawn
widespread criticism from religious groups for its depiction of a mock
crucifixion. In Moscow, Russian nationalists vowed to disrupt her
concert, while in Germany the authorities briefly considered an
investigation under the country's religious blasphemy laws.
Tuesday's Moscow performance at the Luzhniki stadium, which was guarded
by up to 7,000 police, passed off without any serious problems.

(shrug) The money she has to even consider space flight, suggests
that at least a few people disagree with you...

Doesn't it bug you that this adminstration has been using the troops as

The only lie was claiming that Saddam Hussein had WMD as the reason to
invade Iraq. And to make matters worse is that Iran and North Korea go
out of their way stating that they are making WMD and we do nothing.
Who is benefitting from this war, Fred?

I wouldn't exactly call the diplomatic efforts with North Korea and

Well, this is 25% right. That's actually pretty good for Eric. Let's
score it out, shall we?
1) Iran is going out of their way stating that they are making WMD.
False. Iran, in point of fact, absolutely denies they have such a
weapons program.
2) We are doing nothing about Iran's weapon program.
False.
3) North Korea is going out of their way stating they are making WMD.
Hey, he got one right! Just goes to show that even a stopped clock or
an Eric Chomko is right once in a while.
4) We're doing nothing about North Korea's weapon program.
False. It was too good to be true that he'd get more than one thing
right.
:Who is benefitting from this war, Fred?
Pretty much everyone but Saddam Hussein, Eric.

It appears that what bin Laden has received is more in the line of a

Iran must be the next country on the disassembly line.

Will Bush have the guts to invade? Do we have the troops to do it? You
make it sound automatic that invading Iran will be some sort of
victory.
We can't even get peace in Iraq after we toppled Saddam, how do you
expect ivading Iran will be a better solution.

Iran isn't designed for invasion...they actually have troops and weapons
that haven't been isolated from the outside world for a decade. An attack
on Iran would involve bombing from offshore and air.
Do we have the troops to do it?
Navy and Airforce...not nearly as busy in Iraq as the Army.
You make it sound automatic that invading Iran will be some sort of
victory.
'We' will bomb them back into the stone age. Who implied victory? Nut
cases declared victory in Iraq and look how that turned out. The goal with
Iran wouldn't be to control them...just to disable their ability to export
'evil' and produce massive amounts of weapons. What needs to be done in
Iran is what the first President Bush did to Iraq. Squish them, then rope
off the area and let it rot. That worked just fine until the current Bush
made the mistake of thinking that something more needed to be done.
We can't even get peace in Iraq after we toppled Saddam, how do you
expect ivading Iran will be a better solution.
You really don't know which side you are arguing with, do you? Maybe go
back and read the post you replied to and try not to think of it as a
pro-bush rant.

Right, that's why Bush had "Mission Accomplished" on that ship. Everyone
knows we conquered Iraq and overthrew Saddam. That was the easy part.
The problem is that the idiots running the war: Bush, Cheney and
Rumsfeld, made no effort to plan for the occupation. That is why we are
still losing hundreds of troops in Iraq.

Yes. Right. Exactly like it.
<rolling eyes at level of historical ignorance being displayed>
Germany had been at war for almost six years. Its cities had been
bombed to rubble. It had lost several million troops, and many
civilians. At the end, it was reduced to putting poorly-made guns in
the hands of untrained teenagers, as young as fourteen or fifteen. It
was out of ammunition. When the Americans marched in, it was in a
state of utter defeat.
Even if there were a serious resistance movement (the Werwolf did in
fact attack some of the allies, but mostly the Russians, who had
treated, and continued to treat the German people much more brutally),
it had little in the way of resources to work with. There was no one
on the borders to supply it with arms or troops. It was done.
Japan was in a similar state (aided by the fact that once the Emperor
surrendered, that was that as far as the Japanese people were
concerned).
Iraq, by contrast, suffered very little damage in the removal of
Saddam, and the army wasn't defeated, but simply dissipated, and what
remained of it was disbanded (this was indeed one of the mistakes that
the administration made, in retrospect). So it had large numbers of
able-bodied men with which to wage an insurgency. It had and has
large stores of ammunition, including high explosives. It also
received, and continues to receive, foreign support, from Syria, Iran,
and Saudi Arabia, in the form of both troops and funds.
The difference is that Bush was a total idiot after the
conquest of Iraq and has caused the deaths of thousands of Iraqis and
Americans because he refused to plan for the occupation.
No, there was a plan. It may not have been a great one, but Roosevelt
had no plan for the occupation of Germany, either. It took a couple
years for Marshall to come up with one.

The plan was "Hand the keys over to Chalabi, be out in 90 days, and if you
don't think that'll work, you're fired."

Sadly, Mike Schilling is _mostly_ right (though I think the "90 days"
part is grossly exaggerated). We really didn't think through just how
_bad_ a people who had lived under a tyranny for decades and had NO
history of democratic self-government would be at running their own
country.
Hey, Mike, surprised that I agreed with you on this one?

It's based on reports I read at Newsweek about the time of the initial
invasion. They were leaks of course, since the actual plans were never made
public, but the time-frame discussed was a 60-90 day occupation. (My guess
is that that was the time before beginning to withdraw, not before the last
American left, but I don't recall that much detail.)

What shocks me is that the level of Shiite-Sunni-Kurdish violence was so
badly underestimated. Yugoslavia was a perfect object lesson, and it was
ignored.
Hey, Mike, surprised that I agreed with you on this one?
Pleasantly so :-)

You mean, the magazine so left-wing that it was the first and most dogged
pusher of the Monica Lewinsky story?
It's hilarious the way you people sneer at any medium that isn't a
right-wing rag.

It's the same Newsweek. The one that sells stories on what it thinks
will get the highest readership, regardless of facts.

Absolutely. You can picture the meeting where they decided that speculation
on the plans for rebuilding Iraq would be the hot ticket that week.
Geez, you're a moron.
