New Talk To Action anthology:United Methodism Under Attack
John Dorhauer's new weekly series on Talk To Action may be
unprecedented : Dorhauer's series concerns an over two decade long
campaign, by the far-right wing financed Institute For Religion and
Democracy and so called "renewal" groups advocating literal
interpretations of the Bible and far right social and political views,
to destroy mainstream Protestant Christianity in America. Operating
from within mainline Protestant denominations "renewal" groups work to
sow dissension via wedge issues such as gay marriage, incite schisms,
and so break apart mainstream and liberal denominations and neutralize
them as an effective force in American politics.
Before now this campaign has seldom been discussed so publicly, and
with John Dorhauer's series we have an ongoing chronicle from the
heart of one embattled denomination, the United Churches of Christ.
There are more Christians on the left/liberal side of politics than on
the right, observed George Lakoff, but they are not organized to even
remotely the same degree as the Christian right.
Well, here's the reason for that. . .

Sure. It's been going on for years already and has 3 main planks:
1) Support for Israel no matter what. As though Christianity is not the
New Israel.
2) Hatred of gays.
3) Anti-abortion even when not having an abortion kills the mother.
Its pretty easy to see who is funding it.

Without reading the article, is "mainstream Protestantism" the Protestants
who follow the teachings of Jesus, to be compassionate, tolerant, etc, or
are they the Biblical literalist Protestants who want to outlaw abortion,

Without reading the article, is "mainstream Protestantism" the Protestants
who follow the teachings of Jesus, to be compassionate, tolerant, etc, or
are they the Biblical literalist Protestants who want to outlaw abortion,
gay marriage, etc?
There are essentially three presbyterian denominations, the PCUSA (the
largest and most well known), The PCA "presbyterian church of
america" (a more orthodox branch), and a third branch the EPC
"evangelical presbyterian church" which seems to be growing in
congregational numbers as more churches are voting to split from the
PCUSA and affiliate with the smaller, more conservative, EPC
denomination.
Although there is certainly more than one significant difference
between the denomonations, it would seem that as of late the
congregations decision to leave the PCUSA in favor of the EPC has been
in large part due to the PCUSA's more liberal stance on gay
ordination(a recent move away from traditional doctrine) and the
blessing of same sex unions (not equated with marriage)

The REAL reason for the attacks on the Protestant majority
has been the move toward imposing sanctions on Israel.

Huh? Indeed. See, it's not mentioned much here:

Its the subject of much discussion and is seen as a threat.
Thats why so many bought and paid for "televangelists"
and other "fundamentalist Christians" (who hang out in
the Old Testament more than the New) are shilling for
Israel support no matter what.

I understand the point you are making however, I am still inclined to
think "old school" presbyterians are more apt to stick by their less
liberal beliefs; the more "tolerant" the PCUSA becomes the more they
will find themselves losing congregations to the more "traditional" EPC

Get your facts straight. The literalists spend more time
hanging out in the Old Testament in which "we see through
a glass darkly", hence they cannot be REAL Christians
but rather an echo of Old Testament Jews.
Secondly, there is NO assertion made by Jesus on the
subject of abortion or that the Gays should all
be driven out.
So the people you describe are not REAL Christians
even less "Protestants".
You saw REAL Christians last year when the Amish
responded to murder and tragedy in their midst.
